Herr Jesu, habe Acht auf mich

My next new hymn translation for Lochner’s Passion-book consisted of stanzas 1–2 of Christoph von Pfeil’s (d. 1782) “Herr Jesu, habe Acht auf mich,” for the end of Devotion 14 (“Christ’s Further Discourses after Judas’ Departure”). I here give a full translation, supplementing the text from von Pfeil’s Evangelisches Gesangbuch (1782), where it bears the title “The Lord’s Preservation in the Hour of Trial.”

Mel.: Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt

LORD Jesus, to my soul attend,
  And in my life forever
I will mine eyes upon Thee bend,
And turn them from Thee never.
Against the tempter’s craft and might
Defend me! So shall all be right.

2 Lord Jesus, who didst suffer all,
  And bear, like us, temptation,
And if I in temptation fall,
  For me mak’st intercession:
Attend me in temptation’s hour,
And save me thence with godly pow’r.

3 Forgive me that I oft have erred,
  Nor kept my watch abiding,
And have not driven by God’s Word
  The foe back into hiding,
Nor always sought Thy step to trace:
O Lord, attend me in Thy grace.

4 Go, Satan, get thee gone from me!
  I’m dead to all transgression,
To wicked lust, the world, and thee.
Bought by Christ’s blood and Passion,
To Him I live till life shall end,
And pray Thee, Lord, my soul attend!

GERMAN
Herr Jesu, habe Acht auf mich,
and laß in meinem Leben
mich immer, auch mein Herr! auf dich,
und auf mich Achtung geben!
vor des Versuchers List und Macht
schütz mich; so bin ich wohl bewacht.

2 Herr Jesu! der du überall,
wie wir, Versuchung littest,
und wenn ich in Versuchung fall,
für mich beim Vater bittest.
Hab in Versuchung auf mich Acht,
und hilf heraus mit Jesus-Macht.

3 Vergib, daß ich nicht immerfort
auf meiner Hut geblieben,
daß ich den Feind mit Gottes Wort
nicht von mir abgetrieben;

Herr Jesu, A und O

Here is my translation of the death and burial hymn, “Herr Jesu, A und O” (Christoph Carl Ludwig von Pfeil, d. 1784), in Ev.-luth. Gsb #628, first published in Des Reichs-Freiherrn . . . Evangelische Glaubens- und Herzens-Gesänge (Dinkelsbühl, 1783) with the title: “Hymn upon Completion of One’s Course.” The hymn, says Fischer, belongs to the year 1778. The appointed melody is “O Gott, du frommer Gott.”

LORD Jesus, First and Last,
Beginning, Middle, Ending,
Lord of the faith, true God!
My soul to Thee commending,
I pray, Immanuel,
Perfect Thy work in me,
Till I with Thee can say:
“’Tis finished” finally!

2 That when my end is come,
I may not see death ever,
But only pass through death
To life that ceaseth never;
Stay with me in that hour,
Thy ample helps deploy,
So that my dying day
May be a feast of joy.

3 When Satan frightens me,
When sins and faults oppress me,
Let me see Thee, God’s Lamb,
Nailed to the cross to bless me:
Redeemer, let me see
How there Thou didst repay
The debt of my sins too,
And blot them out for aye.

4 Then will I yield with joy
Into Thy hands, O Savior,
My spirit and my life,
To be Thy own forever,
And, from distress redeemed
By Thy death-agony,
Fall in Thy wounds asleep
With deep tranquility.

GERMAN
Herr Jesu, A und O,
der Anfang und das Ende,
des Glaubens Herr und Gott!
Immanuel! vollende
dein Gnadenwerk in mir
durch deine Gottesmacht,
bis daß ich rufen kann
mit dir: "Es ist vollbracht!"

2 Daß, wenn mein Ende kommt,
ich dann den Tod nicht sehe;
daß ich nur durch den Tod
ins Leben übergehe.
Steh mir mit deiner Kraft
in dieser Stunde bei,
daß mir mein Todestag
ein froher Festtag sei!

3 Wenn mich der Satan schreckt,
wenn mich die Sünden drücken,
so laß mich an dem Kreuz,
Lamm Gottes! dich erblicken.
Erlöser! wie du da
auch meine Schuldenlast
gebüßet und bezahlt
und ausgetilget hast.

4 Dann will ich meinen Geist,
dann will ich dieses Leben
in deine Jesus-Hand
mit Freuden übergeben.
Erlöst von aller Noth
durch deine Todespein
schlaf ich getrost und sanft
in deinen Wunden ein.

Wohl einem Haus, wo Jesus Christ

Here is my partial re-translation and supplement of C. Winkworth’s and ELHB’s translation of the Domestic Estate hymn “Wohl einem Haus, wo Jesus Christ” (Christoph Carl Ludwig von Pfeil, d. 1784), Ev.-luth. Gsb #549, first appearing in the Schelborn ed. of von Pfeil’s works (1782) with the title: “Pleasant image of a household that serves the Lord. For the parents of Jesus, on the First Sunday after the Feast of the Epiphany of Christ, 1746.” It was later included in hymnals of the 19th c., such as Württemberg, Lange, Halberstadt, Erfurt, and the Liederschatz. Since Winkworth’s version was incomplete, and partly unsatisfactory from the internal Lutheran perspective, I have supplied a few substitute stanzas. The appointed melody is “Wo Gott zum Haus nicht gibt sein Gunst.” (Note: A different full and amended version is given by Rev. C. Neuendorf here.)

OH, blest the house, whate’er befall,
Where Jesus Christ is All in All;
Yea, if He were not dwelling there,
How poor and dark and void it were!

2 Oh, blest, man, wife, and progeny,
Who live in faith’s true unity
And serve their Lord and Maker still
According to His Law and will!

3 Oh, blest, when such a house doth give
A model how the world should live:
That worship is vain work alone
Unless in spirit it be done!

4 Blest, where the incense of their pray’r
Continually doth fill the air,
And there is nothing seen or heard
Except God’s Work and Holy Word!

5 Blest, when in their mundane estate
They faithfully collaborate,
And each in his own work and way,
True concord’s Spirit doth display!

6 Oh, blest the parents who give heed
Unto their children’s foremost need,
And weary not of care or cost:
To them and heav’n shall none be lost!

7 Blest such a house! It prospers well;
In peace and joy the parents dwell,
And in their children’s lot is shown
How richly God can bless His own.

8 Then here will I and mine today
A solemn cov’nant make, and say:
Though all the world forsake Thy Word,
I and my house will serve the Lord.

sammt meinem Hause diesen Bund:
Wich alles Volk auch von ihm fern,
ich und mein Haus stehn bei dem Herrn!

Jesu, du allein

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Jesu, du allein” (Christoph Carl Ludwig von Pfeil, d. 1784), Ev.-Luth. Gsb #501, a hymn about the following of, or rather the being led by, Christ; also a prayer of repentance. It first appears in Evangelisches Gesangbuch bestehend in Psalmen und Lobgesängen . . . (Memmingen, 1782) with the title “Jesus my Leader, 1761.” The melody is “Seelenbräutigam.”

JESUS, none but Thee
Shall my leader be!
Thy true pathway to me showing,
Keep me on the narrow going,
For truth’s ground, O Lord,
Is Thy pledge and Word.

2 Yet, O Lord, impart
To my mind and heart
Constant fear and godly caution
Lest I lose the righteous motion;
Keep me by Thy fear
From all danger here.

3 Since Thou cam’st to men
To restore again
To the way the lost and erring,
Sheep that wandered homeward bearing,
Therefore I implore:
Also me restore!

4 Shepherd good and true,
I have wandered too
Like a sheep on earth so lowly;
Lead me to Thy haven holy,
Let me thither be
Led to live with Thee.

GERMAN
Jesu! du allein
sollst mein Führer sein,
zeige mir selbst deine Wege,
deiner Wahrheit schmale Stege;
deiner Wahrheit Grund
ist dein Wort und Bund.

2 Gründe, Herr! dabei,
stete Furcht und Scheu
in mir und in meiner Seelen
denen Weg nicht zu verfehlen;
deine Furcht bewahr
mich vor der Gefahr!

3 Weil du kommen bist,
was verirret ist
wiederum zurecht zu führen
und kein Schäflein zu verlieren,
darum fleht dein Knecht:
führe mich zurecht!

4 Guter, treuer Hirt!
ich bin ganz verirrt;
ein verloren Schaaf auf Erden,
führe mich zu deinen Heerden,
führe mich dahin,
wo ich bei dir bin.
