Herr und Gott der Tag und Nächte

Here is my supplemental translation for the evening hymn “Herr und Gott der Tag und Nächte” (Friedrich Athanasius Freylinghausen, d. 1739), Ev.-luth. Gsb #617, originally the author’s hymnal of 1704, identified as his by Gotthilf August Francke in the foreword to the posthumous edition of Freylinghausen 1741. My supplement consists of the first stanza, which is hereby prefixed to the remaining stanzas (2–6) translated by Buckoll in the translation of Bunsen’s Versuch, no. LXII, p. 100f. (1842), with a few minor alterations based on the German. The appointed melody in the Wisc. hymnal is “O du Liebe meiner Liebe.” Another melody from Freylinghausen’s hymnal is seen here.

L
ORD, the days and nights ordaining,
Neither sleep’st nor slumb’rest Thou! *Ps. 121:4
See how Thy poor child, remaining
In his filial duty now,
As the eventide has started
And the day has hastened by,
With Thy angels, humble-hearted,
Bows before Thy throne on high.

2 Father, I, unworthy, merit
None of all Thy grace and truth, *Gen. 32:10
Which Thine all-pervading Spirit
still hath show’red from earliest youth;
E’en today fresh gifts are given;
Oh, that I may thankful prove!
Praised be Thou to highest heaven!
Bless me yet with further love!

3 Lord, my sins no longer viewing,
Turn Thee from my guilt away;
Still Thy patient love renewing,
Though Thy vengeful pow’r might slay!
Think on Jesus’ expiation, *1 Jn 2:2 et al.
Which my soul’s atonement sealed,
Whence alone I found salvation,—
Whence the prize of Life revealed!

4 Lord, I fain would freedom borrow,
Through the Lamb’s unspotted blood, *1 Pe. 1:19
From the weight of sinful sorrow,
From the deadly serpent-brood.
Body, soul to Thee be holy!
Make my conscience clean and pure!
May I yield Thee service lowly,
Through Thy Spirit true and sure!

5 Let me linger not nor tarry,
Never backward turn my face!
Onward let Thy Spirit carry
All my steps with ceaseless pace
Toward the prize with eager pleasure, *1 Cor. 9:24
Where the Lamb redeemed our loss
With His blood, our richest treasure,
Led and fastened to the cross!

6 Calmly, then, to sleep I yield me;—
Let me rest, to Thee resigned:
Father, with Thy blessing shield me,—
Soul and body, heart and mind!
Through the night Thy child embracing,
’Neath Thy gracious shelter take;
Till my Lord’s last footsteps tracing
in His likeness I shall wake! *Ps. 17:15

GERMAN
Herr und Gott der Tag und Nächte,
der du schläfst noch schlummerst nicht:
schaue, wie dein arm Gemächte
jetzt nach seiner Kindespflicht,
da es Abend ist geworden
und der Tag sich hat geneigt,
sammt der Deinen ganzen Orden
sich vor deinem Throne beugt.

2 Vater! ich bin zu geringe
aller Treu und Gütigkeit,
die du, Wesen aller dinge,
mir in meiner Lebenszeit
und auch heute hast erwiesen.
O, daß ich recht dankbar wär1
Herr,dein Nam sei hochgepriesen;
dein Herz ferner zu mir kehr.

3 Siehe nicht an mein Verbrechen,
ach, gedenke nicht der Schuld,
die dein strenges Recht könnt rachen;
habe doch mit mir Geduld:
schaue an des Sohnes Wunden,
dadurch ich versöhnet bin,
dadurch ich Erlösung funden
und das Leben zum Gewinn.

4 Ich verlange frei zu werden
durch das reine Lammesblut
von der Sündenlast Beschwerden,
von der finstern Schlangenbrut.
Ach! Herr, reinge mein Gewissen;
Leib und Seel dir heilig sei:
dein Geist mache mich beflissen
dir zu dienen ohne Scheu.

5 Laß mich nicht dahinten bleiben,
laß mich nicht zurücke sehn;
dein Geist müsse mich stets treiben
unverzüglich fort zu gehn,
ja mit schnellem Schritt zu laufen
zu dem Kleinod, daß das Lamm,
uns mit Blute zu erkaufen,
ist gebracht aus Kreuzes Stamm.

6 Drauf will ich mich schlafen legen:
laß mich dir empfohlen sein!
Vater, gönne mir den Segen,
der an Leib und Geiste rein
mich auch in der Nacht bewahre;
deine Gnade sei mein Schild,
bis ich meinem Schatz nachfahre
und erwach nach seinem Bild.

Der Tag ist hin / Mein Geist und Sinn

Here is my translation of the evening hymn “Der Tag ist hin / Mein Geist und Sinn” (Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen, d. 1739), Ev.-luth. Gsb #610, originally from Freylinghausen Gsb 1704, given as a companion piece to the morning hymn “Die Nacht ist hin / mein Geist und Sinn.” It is notable for borrowing a Good Friday melody for a quite different purpose, a trend increasingly seen in the 18th c.: “O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid.” A cento translation by Buckoll, which curiously adds an internal rhyme on the 4th line of each stanza, is found here.

THE day is o’er,
And longing sore
Fills all my mind and spirit
For the Day that perfectly
From all plagues will cure it.

2 The night is here;
Abide Thou near,
O Jesus, Light of heaven!
With Thy rays let shades of sin
From my heart be driven.

3 The light of sun
From us doth run:
O Sun by none created,
Shed thy light that I may be
Gladdened and elated.

4 The moonlight thin
Now falleth in,
The darkness to diminish;
May no wav’ring in my course
Keep me from the finish.

5 The starry host
In God doth boast,
Amid the heavens glimm’ring;
Blest is he who in that world
Shall like stars be shimm’ring.

6 All things that stirred,
By labors spurred,
In shelters calm are resting;
Now Thy work in me, O Lord,
Let me be attesting.

7 Each heart would sleep
In silence deep,
Each to his rest attendeth;
Jesus, calm the restlessness
That our peace oft rendeth.

8 I too desire
Now to retire
And to my bed be turning;
Likewise, Lord, oh, let my heart
For Thy rest be yearning!

9 Watch o’er me still,
Lest any ill
My spirit harm or bother;
Charge Thy fearless angel host
Round my bed to gather.

10 But when shall we
The ending see
Of day and night’s exchanging?
When the Day of days shall dawn
By Thy wise arranging.

11 When this world falls,
Which so appalls
Mount Zion, weeping nightly,
Yonder moon and stars shall shine
Seven times more brightly

12 When that day dawns,
Then Salem’s sons
Will night no more be mourning;
For the Lamb shall be their Light,
Beauty, and Adorning.

13 Alleluia!
Would I were there,
Where God is worshiped solely,
Where unceasingly they cry
Holy, Holy, Holy!

14 O Jesus Christ,
My Help and Rest,
Bring me there by Thy favor
Where before Thee I may bask
In Thy splendor ever.

GERMAN
Der Tag ist hin,
mein Geist und Sinn
sehnt sich nach jenem Tage.
der uns völlig machen wird
frei von aller Plage.

2 Die Nacht ist da,
sei du mir nah,
Jesu, mit hellen Kerzen;
treib der Sünden Dunkelheit
weg aus meinem Herzen.

3 Der Sonnen Licht
uns jetzt gebricht:
o unerschaffne Sonne,
brich mit deinem Licht hervor,
mir zur Freud und Wonne.

4 Des Mondes Schein
fällt nun herein,
die Finsterniß zu mindern;
ach, daß nichts Veränderlichs
meinen Lauf möcht hindern.

5 Das Sternenheer
zu Gottes Ehr
am blauen Himmel flimmert:
wohl dem, der in jener Welt
gleich den Sternen schimmert!

6 Was sich geregt
und vor bewegt
ruht jetzt von seinen Werken:
laß mich, Herr, in stiller Ruh
dein Werk in mir merken.

7 Ein jeder will
bei solcher Still
der süßen Ruhe pflegen:
laß die Unruh dieser Zeit,
Jesu, bald sich legen.

8 Ich selbst will auch,
nach meinem Brauch
nun in mein Bettlein steigen:
laß mein Herz zu deinem sich
als zum Bettlein neigen.

9 Halt du die Wach,
damit kein Ach
und Schmerz den Geist berühre,
sende deiner Engel Schaar,
die mein Bettlein ziere.

10 Wenn aber soll
der Wechsel wohl
der Tag und Nächte weichen?
Wenn der Tag anbrechen wird,
dem kein Tag zu gleichen.

11 In jener Welt,
da diese fällt,
die Zion noch macht weinen,
soll nach heller siebenmal
Mond und Sterne scheinen.

12 Alsdenn wird nicht
der Sonnen Licht
Jerusalem verlieren;
denn das Lamm ist selbst das Licht
das die Stadt wird zieren.

13 Hallelujah
ei wär ich da,
da Alles lieblich klinget,
da man ohn Abwechselung
heilig, heilig singet.

14 O Jesu du,
mein Hülf und Ruh,
laß mich dahin gelangen,
daß ich mög in deinem Glanz
vor dir ewig prangen.

Wach auf, mein Herz, die Nacht ist hin

Here is my translation of the Easter hymn “Wach auf, mein Herz, die Nacht ist hin” (Laurentius Laurentii, 1700), appearing in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #194, and originating from Laurentii’s Evangelia melodica, where it is appointed for First Easter Day (according to the Lutheran usage, Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost were observed with three consecutive feast-days) and makes a nice application of the Easter Lesson. Having misread my records, I made the translation despite the existence of two others: Miss Alice Manington, “Wake up, my heart, the night has flown,” and J. Buckoll, “Rouse up, my heart, the night is o’er.” However, I find the former less faithful, and wanting in some parts, and the latter entirely unavailable except for its first line, so I do not count this a superfluous translation. The appointed melody is “Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.”

AWAKE, my heart! The night is o’er,
The sun is now arisen!
This day the Savior burst death’s door
And left His stony prison,
Delight to all the world to bring,
So with thy mind and spirit spring
To welcome Christ the Savior!

2 Rise from the tomb of sin and death,
A new life duly living;
And finish well thy course of faith
And let thy heart be striving
To heaven, where Thy Jesus is
Seek that which is above, as His
True Christian, ris’n in spirit.

3 Forget what things behind thee lie,
And seek for what’s above thee,
And let thy heart e’er rise on high
To Jesus, who doth love thee.
Tread down the wicked world, and race
To reach the heav’nly dwelling place,
Where Jesus e’er abideth.

4 Though heavy stones of care annoy,
Thy Jesus will remove them;
All Christians can find peace and joy
E’en where their crosses prove them
Cast all thy cares on Him today;
Fret not, He is not far away
For He is now arisen.

5 Then to the tomb of Jesus go,
With those dear women faring
Who early leave (they love Him so),
Their gift of ointment bearing,
And thou shalt see that Christ did rise
From death today, no more He lies
Within the tomb’s dark chamber.

6 Today did Judah’s Lion gain
The vict’ry o’er damnation;
Today the Lamb of God once slain
For all mankind’s salvation
Brought righteousness and life to light,
For after conqu’ring in the fight
He led His foes in triumph.

7 So rise, my heart, and join the fight,
Christ’s vict’ry stands unshaken;
In thee He will prevail with might
For He all pow’r hath taken
From every foe, that thou may’st win,
And rise, and thy new life begin,
Thy God in true faith serving.

8 The devil, world, and hell may sneer
But shrink not nor be flighty,
For Jesus lives! There’s naught to fear!
He is the Champion mighty
Who wears the crown and doth uphold
The weak and least ones in the world;
So thou shalt be victorious.

9 O Christ my Lord, who to the light
From gloomy death art risen!
Save us from Satan’s guile and might
And from death’s awful prison
That we may all arise as one
And that new life may be begun
Which Thou for us hast gotten.

10 Be Thou adored by all God’s sons
In this world yet contending,
And by all those victorious ones
In glory never-ending,
Who overcame by Thy dear blood;
Lord Jesus, strength and courage good
To overcome, oh, grant us!

und such ein neues Leben;
vollführe deinen Glaubenslauf
und laß dein Herz sich heben
gen Himmel, da dein Jesus ist,
und such was droben, als ein Christ,
der geistlich auferstanden.

3 Vergiß nun was dahinten ist,
und tracht nach dem, was droben,
damit dein Herz zu jeder Frist
zu Jesu sei erhoben.
Tritt unter dich die böse Welt
und strebe nach dem Himmelszelt,
wo Jesus ist zu finden.

4 Quällt dich ein schwerer Sorgenstein:
dein Jesus wird ihn heben;
es kann ein Christ bei Kreuzespein
in Freud und Wonne leben.
Wirf dein Anliegen auf den Herrn
und sorge nicht: er ist nicht fern,
weil er ist auferstanden.

5 Geh mit Maria Magdalen
und Salome zum Grabe,
die früh dahin aus Liebe gehn
mit ihrer Salbungsgabe;

noch gar der Hölle Rachen;
denn Jesus lebt, es hat kein Noth;
er ist noch bei den Schwachen
und den Geringsten in der Welt
als ein gekrönter Siegesheld;
drum wirst du überwinden.

9 Ach, mein Herr Jesu, der du bist
von Todten auferstanden,
rett uns aus Satans Macht und List
und aus des Todes Banden,
daß wir zusammen insgemein
zum neuen Leben gehen ein,
daß du uns hast erworben.

10 Sei hochgelobt in dieser Zeit
von allen Gotteskindern,
und ewig in der Herrlichkeit
von allen Überwindern,
die überwunden durch dein Blut:
Herr Jesu, gieb uns Kraft und Muth,
daß wir auch überwinden.
