Here is my translation of the hymn, “Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort / und bleib der Kirche Schutz und Hort” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, for the commemoration of Dr. Luther (perhaps Nov. 10 or Feb. 18), but not inappropriate for Reformation Day. As with other parodies, the first line of each stanza is taken from the analogous line of the original hymn, and remaining lines are new. Here I follow Winkworth’s translation for the most part in stanzas 1–5, with a more accurate alternate in stanza 3, a better-rhyming alternate in stanza 4.
Mel.: Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort.
LORD, keep us steadfast in Thy Word,
Be still the church’s Rock assured,
Defend her, as in every age,
Against the pope’s and devil’s rage.
2 Lord Jesus Christ, Thy pow’r make known,
Who art the church’s Head alone;
Thy Zion looks alone to Thee,
Our mighty Fortress still to be.
3 O Comforter of priceless worth, {God, Holy Ghost, the Couns’lor dear}
Let here Thy holy fire and hearth {Thy holy fire and hearth let here}
Among us pure and stainless be,
And from all adversaries free.
4 Destroy their counsels, Lord our God, {O Lord, their counsels put to shame,}
In roof and frame keep Thine abode {Preserve Thy house in roof and frame}
From ruin, rot, and beating blow,
To stand secure against the foe—
5 So that at last they may perceive
That Thou dost live, and wilt not leave
Thy doctrine helpless, which Thou hast
By Luther into daylight cast.
6 Grant us Thy peace, Lord, graciously,
For This Thy flock looks but to Thee,
Which is by Luther’s surname known,
And Thee as God doth praise and own.
7 Grant to our dear authority,
That with all Christians gen’rally
They may hold firm the faith confessed,
And by Thy Word be richly blest.
8 Alleluia! To Thee be praise
And thanks, Most High, for all our days,
That Thou didst Luther raise, who hath
Restored to us Thy light of faith!

GERMAN
Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort
und bleib der Kirche Schutz und Hort,
wie du sie hast bisher beschirmt,
da Pabst und Teufel sie bestürmt.
2 Beweis dein Macht, Herr Jesu Christ,
der du das Haupt der kirchen bist,
dein Zion sieht auf dich allein,
uns eine feste Burg zu sein.
3 Gott Heilger Geist, du Tröster werth,
hilf, daß dein Feuer und dein Herd
bei uns rein unverfälscht und frei
von allen Widersachern sei.
4 Ihr Anschläg, Herr, zu nichte mach,
erhalt dein Haus in Dach und Fach,
damit es niemals untergeh,
und sicher vor den Feinden steh.
5 So werden sie erkennen doch,
du lebest und erhaltest noch
die Lehre, die durch deinen Rath,
Lutherus uns gezeiget hat.
6 Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich,
denn nur auf dich verlässet sich
dein Häuflein, das sich Luthrisch nennt,
und dich als seinen Gott bekennt.
7 GIeb unsrer lieben Obrigkeit,
und auch der ganzen Christenheit,
daß sie in wahrem Glauben treu
und durch dein Wort voll Segen sei.
8 Nun Hallelujah! Preis und Dank
sei dir, o Höchster, lebenslang,
daß du Lutherum hast erweckt,
der uns dein Licht hat aufgesteckt.
