Jauchzet dem Herren alle Land

Here is my translation of the hymn “Jauchzet dem Herren alle Land” (1538), an early paraphrase of psalm 100, and the original "Jauchzet dem Herren" (not to be confused with the later "Jauchzet dem Herren alle Welt"). The melody is proper to this text. You will note that the first two lines were later reappropriated by Philipp Nicolai for the beginning of his “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern” (1599).

SHOUT to the Lord, ye nations all,
For He brings aid to those who call
And cry to Him in suff’ring.
Rejoicing, come, before Him fall,
Your joyful service off’ring.

2 The Lord is God, let all confess,
From humble dust He fashioned us,
His name and glory gave us,
And made us His, from all distress
And suffering to save us.

3 With thanks approach the gates of God,
And fill His courts with praise and laud,
All honor to Him render,
For from all pain and scourge and rod,
He is our sure Defender.

4 The Lord is good, His grace sustains,
His lovingkindness never wanes,
So thank His name forever.
His faith forever firm remains,
Through Jesus Christ our Savior.

GERMAN

Jauchzet dem Herren alle Land,
dann er thut allen den Beistand
die ihn bitten im Leiden.
Kommt, daß ihr frölich vor ihm steht,
und dienet ihm mit Freuden.
2 Erkennet, daß der Herr is Gott;
er hat uns gmacht aus Staub und Kot
zu schaffen seiner Wende,
zu seinem Volk, daß er aus Noth
erlöset uns aus Leide.
3. Mit Dank geht zu sein Pforten ein,
mit Lobe in die Vorhöf sein,
und thut ihm Ehr beweisen,
dann er hilft allen aus der Pein
die seinen Namen preisen.

4. Dann der Herr ist gut und gnädig
und seine Güt währet ewig,
drum danket seinem Namen,
sein Glaub ist für und für bständig,
durch Christum Jesum, Amen.
