Jesu, du Gottes Lämmelein

Here is my translation of the Passion hymn “Jesu, du Gottes Lämmelein” (M. Altenburg, ca. 1640), quoted in full in Lochner’s Passion-book, Devotion 26 (“Peter Denies the Lord for the First Time”), a hymn first designed to be sung by the congregation before the Passion reading. I include the original setting and that in Gotha 1646.

O JESUS, dearest Lamb of God,
  How deep the wounds that fill us!
Pour by Thy Word Thy precious blood
  Into us now, and heal us!

So we, Thy bitter agony
  In true faith having claimèd,
In cross and woe may follow Thee,
  Of Thy cross unashamèd.

For this our hearts we ready yield
  To hear Thy holy Passion;
Therein be by Thy Spirit sealed
  These words for our salvation!

Jesu du Gottes Lämmelein
wie tief sind unsre Wunden;
Laß durch dein Wort triefen darein
dein Blute in dieser Stunden.

2 Daß wir dein Leiden recht verstehn,
im Glauben des uns annehmen,
im Kreuz und Leiden dir nachgehn,
deinr Marter uns nicht schämen.

3 Drauf schickn wir unsre Herzen zu,
deim Leiden zu zuhören,
dein Heilger Geist versiegeln thu,
was wir jetzt werden hören.
