O Jesu meiner Seele Leben

Here is my translation of the Christian Life hymn “O Jesu meiner Seele Leben” (Heinrich Georg Neuß, d. ), Ev.-luth. Gsb #533, first appearing in the author’s Heb-Opfer (1692), titled: “Of the right way to Life,” with indication of being written in 1688. The appointed melody in the Wisc. hymnal is “Dir, dir Jehova will ich singen,” clearly the form with longer lines and repeats (cf. the translation of the hymn “Herr Jesu Christ, mein Licht und Leben”).

O JESUS, Thou my Life and Splendor,
My highest Treasure and my heart’s Delight!
To Thee, my God, I would surrender;
Oh, purge away my sinful ruin quite!
Oh, Jesus, keep me in Thy care, I pray,
And show Thou me (show me) the living way!

2 Whene’er the world with snares would win me,
When Satan would seduce me, Lord, from Thee,
Whene’er some evil stirs within me,
O God, be Thou a Light and Staff to me!
Oh, Jesus, keep me in Thy care, I pray,
And show Thou me (show me) the living way!

3 O God, Thou Light of hearts believing,
Thy piercing eyes all things, all things detect!
Thou seest our sorrows and our grieving,
Thou givest help to all Thy church elect.
Oh, Jesus, keep me in Thy care, I pray,
And show Thou me (show me) the living way!

4 O Lord, let from Thy throne be pourèd
Light, life, and pow’r, and grace upon Thy child.
Save Israel’s heir, Thy church adorèd,
In grace forgive and cleanse the sin-defiled.
Oh, Jesus, keep me in Thy care, I pray,
And show Thou me (show me) the living way!

GERMAN
O Jesu, meiner Seele Leben,
mein höchster Schatz und meines Herzens Lust,
dir will ich mich, mein Gott, erheben,
ach dämpfe du in mir den Sündenwust.
Ach nimm dich, Jesu, meiner Seelen an,
und zeige mir, zeig mir die Lebensbahn.

2 Wenn mir die Welt die Stricke leget,
wenn Satan mich von dir will ziehen ab,
wenn in mir sich was Böses reget,
so sei o Gott, mein Licht und fester Stab.
Ach, nimm dich, Jesu, meiner Seelen an,
un zeite mir, zeig mir die Lebensbahn.

3 O Gott, du Licht der frommen Herzen,
vor dir ist alles, alles sonnenklar;
du zählest ab der Frommen Schmerzen,
du hilfest deiner auswählten Schaar.
Ach, nimm dich, Jesu, meiner Seelen an,
und zeige mir, zeig mir die Lebensbahn.

4 Ach sende, Herr, aus deinem Throne
Licht Leben, Kraft und Gnade deinem Kind.
Hilf, Israeli, deinem Sohne,
vergieb aus Gnaden alle unsre Sünd.
Ach nimm dich, Jesu, meiner Seelen an,
und zeige mir, zeig mir die Lebensbahn.

Frommes Herz, sei unbetrübet

Here is my translation of the Cross and Comfort hymn, “Frommes Herz, sei unbetrübet” (Heinrich Georg Neuß, d. 1716), from Ev.-Luth. Gsb #521, originally appearing in the 2nd, enlarged edition of the author’s Heb-Opfer (Wernigerode, 1703), p. 188, titled “Patience in the cross.” The appointed melody is “Alle Menschen müssen sterben.”

FAITHFUL heart, let naught disturb thee,
Trust in God and tarry still
In the One who loves thee surely,
And relieves thine every ill.
Let it be to Him commended
Who so long thy house hath tended
And Himself a Father shown;
He forsaketh not His own.

2 If thou suffer much affliction,
Do not therefore wond’ring gaze;
Only see the true depiction
Of the saints in ancient days:
Did they enter without sadness,
Painlessly, to halls of gladness?
No, they all alike are giv’n
Crosses here and crowns in heav’n.

3 In all matters see and ponder
Jesus’ life of poverty:
Take His cross and onward wander,
Only take it willingly.
In that life thou wilt be given
By thy God all bliss and heaven:
Then all scorn and mockery
Will thy crown of glory be.

4 Jesus by sore tribulation
Into heav’nly glory went,
And shall thy life’s whole duration
Be in utter gladness spent?
Truly thou with Him must sorrow
Wilt thou see that joyful morrow:
If the servant’s like his lord,
What hope more could life afford?

5 Why dost thou look back with longing
On the things the world has made,
On their cheating, stealing, wronging,
On the snares which they have laid?
Look upon thy God most holy;
Think how He, the Potter solely,
Hath prepared this pot for thee
From this clay, thy crown to be.

*6 Let the ancient dragon bluster,
Let him rage while yet he may,
Let him all his minions muster,
That at last may come his day!
God will choose the fitting season
For his binding and his prison;
Then He’ll cast him, pow’rless, down
In the lake of fire to drown.

7 As for thee, thy God will raise thee
If thou faithful wilt remain;
Joyful scenes shall then amaze thee,
As thou leavest woe and pain
To the hall of jubilation
For the supper of salvation,
With the patriarchs around,
Where true blessedness is found.

8 Therefore let them fill the measure
Of their sins as is their lust;
Let them in their heinous pleasure
Find their fill, for so they must:
Let them go on, farther, faster,
And look out for great disaster:
God knows well the times and tides,
And will come when He decides.

9 Meanwhile wait and do not fret thee;
Suffer and in God confide;
He will never yet forget thee,
Bread in hunger will provide,
From all evil will deliver
With an arm that weakens never;
No distress shall fall on thee
And o’ercome eternally.

10 Nay, ’tis thou shalt conquer ever,
Since thy Jesus thee upholds:
Thus thou wilt with God find favor,
For thy faith His Son enfolds;
He will here when woes betide thee
As thy Helper stand beside thee,
And in heaven’s majesty
Recompense all misery.

GERMAN
Frommes Herz! sei unbetrübet
und vertraue deinen Gott;
halte still dem, der dich liebet,
der abzehlet deine Noth.
Laß du deinen Vater walten,
der ja lange hausgehalten:
er ist deine Zuversicht,
er verläßt die Seinen nicht.

2 Mußt du gleich viel Leid erfahren,
wundre dich deswegen nicht.
Schaue nur vor alten Jahren
aller Heiligen Geschicht:
ist auch Jemand ohne Leiden
kommen zu dem Saal der Freuden?
Nein, sie haben alle Theil,
so am Kreuze wie am Heil.

3 Nimm vor dich in allen Stücken
deines Jesu Lebenslauf;
nimm sein kreuz auf deinen Rücken,
nimm es doch nur willig auf.
Gott wird dir, in jenem Leben,
Seligkeit und Himmel geben:
denn da wird auch aller Hohn
dir zu einer Ehrenkron.

4 Jesus ist durch schweres Leiden
gangen ein zur Herrlichkeit:
und du woltest nur in Freuden
hier zubringen deine Zeit?
Wahrlich du mußt hier mit weinen,
wenn dir dort das Licht soll scheinen:
wenn der Knecht ist wie sein Herr,
was will denn der Knecht ihm mehr?

5 Und was siehest du zurücke

ihn mit Ketten anzubinden;
dann wird er ihn von dem Stuhl
Stossen in den Feuerpfuhl.

7 Aber dich wird er erhöhen,
wenn du treu verbleiben wirst; […bist;]
du wirst in die Freud eingehen,
wenn dein Weh vorüber ist:
du wirst in dem Freudensaale
sitzen bei dem Abendmahle,
mit der Patriarchen Schaar,
wenn das Heil wird offenbar.

*8 Drum laß sie das Maaß der Sünden,
nach Gelüsten machen voll;
laß ihr Kleuel sie voll winden,
weil es ja so gehen soll:
laß sie nur so ferner machen,
und zu ihrem Unglück wachen:
Gott weiß schon Maaß, Zeit und Ziel,
und wird kommen, wenn er will.

9 Nun so harre du indessen, [Aber…]
leid und traue deinem Gott:
der wird deiner nicht vergessen,
wird im Hunger geben Brod;
er wird dich von allem Bösen
mit gar starkem Arm erlösen,
daß kein Unfall ewiglich
stürz und überwinde dich.

10 Du vielmehr wirst überwinden,
weil dein Jesus dich erhält: [enthält;]
du wirst bei Gott Gnade finden,
weil dein Wesen ihm gefällt;
er wird hier in allen Nöthen,
als dein Helfer, zu dir treten,
und dort in der Herrlichkeit
wohl belohnen alles Leid.

O Vater der Barmherzigkeit, (der du dir deine Heerden)

Here is my translation of the Church / Missions hymn “O Vater der Barmherzigkeit, / der du dir deine Heerden” (Heinrich Georg Neuß, d. 1716). The hymn, which after allusions to Ephesians 4 features an interesting interpretation of Psalm 133, first appears in the Halberstadt hymnal of 1699, then in the author’s own Heb-Opfer (Wernigerode, 1703) with the title “For the Spirit of Concord.” The original subtext seems to be a pietistic criticism (Neuß was variously known as a Pietist or Separatist) of academic, perhaps confessional, disputes. It was later included with many other of his hymns in Freylinghausen 1714, though few of those survived to recent times. We take our text here from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #238, where the appointed melody is “Es is das Heil uns kommen her,” though originally it was to be sung to “Ach Gott vom Himmel sieh darein.”

O FATHER of great clemency,
Who by th’ apostles’ chorus
Didst gather Thy flocks unto Thee
And cause them to be glorious;
Thou by the Spirit badest come
The mighty host of heathendom
Into Thy kingdom gracious.

2 From many nations multiplied,
From languages unnumbered,
From earth’s far corners scattered wide,
From lands by strife encumbered,
Thy gracious Spirit led them all,
Adorned them with Thy glorious call,
One in faith’s perfect union.

3 Oh, show Thy wondrous grace once more,
In our own time, O Father,
And free us from the tongues that war
And strive with one another:
Grant that Thy flock may worship Thee
In Spirit and in unity,
In Thy love ever dwelling.

4 Behold, how by the devil’s art
They sorely are divided;
In strife the flock is torn apart,
And burnt by thoughts misguided;
Confusion rampant rules the lands,
Where none the other understands,
But causes vain division.

5 From all this evil save us, Lord!
Bring in Thy flock benighted,
That ’neath the staff of Thy pure Word
It may be reunited,
That love, the hand of perfectness
May in Thy Spirit all redress,
And bring us out of conflict.

6 Behold, how good and pleasant ’tis
When brethen dwell together
In unity, and there is bliss,
And love their hearts doth tether;
When in the Spirit they are joined,
And bow to God as with one mind,
And in their pray’rs continue.

7 As precious ointment, on the crown
Of Aaron’s head once spilling,
Ran down upon his beard, and down,
His garments wholly filling;
And as the dew of Hermon tall
Doth on the hills of Zion fall,
The region round refreshing:

8 So too the Holy Spirit’s grace
From Christ down on us floweth,—
Whom He hath made His dwelling-place
And as His members knoweth;
This is the fruit of unity:
Salvation, life eternally,
And every heav’nly blessing.

GERMAN
O Vater der Barmherzigkeit,
der du dir deine Heerden
gesammelt zur Apostelzeit
und herrlich lassen werden:
du hast durch deines Geistes Kraft
die große Schaar der Heidenschaft
zu deinem Reich berufen.

2 Aus ihrer Mannigfaltigkeit
des Streits und vieler Sprachen,
dadurch sie in der Welt zerstreut,
sich von einander brachen,
hat sie dein guter Geist geführt,
und sie mit Herrlichkeit geziert
in Einigkeit des Glaubens.

3 Ach! sei doch auch zu dieser Zeit
uns, Vater, wieder gnädig,
und mach uns aus der Zungen Streit
hiewieder frei und ledig:
gieb, daß dein Häuflein für und für
in einem Geiste diene dir,
in deiner Liebe lebe.

4 Ach schaue, wie des Satans List
sie jämmerlich zertrennet,
wie sichs im Zanke beißt und frißt,
im Unverstande brennet:
wie Alles in Verwirrung geht,
da eins das andre nicht versteht
und sich unnöthig zweiet.

5 Ach Herr! hilf solchem Übel ab,
versammle deine Heerde,
daß unter deines Wortes Stab
sie wieder einig werde,
daß das Hand der Vollkommenheit
die Liebe, uns aus allein Streit
in deinem Geiste bringe.

6 Wie schön und lieblich steht es aus,
wenn Brüder sind beisammen
einträchtiglich in einem Haus
und stehn in Liebesflammen;
wenn sie im Geist zusammenstehn,
zu Gott in einem Sinne gehn,
und halten an mit Beten!

7 Gleich wie der Balsam edler Art,
auf Aarons Haupt gegossen,
ins ganze Kleid von seinem Bart
kam niederwärts gestossen;
und wie der Thau von Hermonim
fällt auf Zions Gebirg herum
und alles Land erquicket:

8 Also fleußt Gottes Geistes Gnad
von Christo zu uns nieder
auf die, so er erwählet hat,
auf alle seine Glieder.
Das ist die Frucht der Einigkeit:
Heil, Segen, Leben allezeit,
und alle Himmelsgüter.

Das ist ein theures, werthes Wort

Here is my translation of the Jesus/Redeemer hymn “Das ist ein theures, werthes Wort” (Heinrich Georg Neuß, 1686) based on 1 Tim. 1:16, included in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #139 in the section: “Offices and Life of Jesus.” It should not be confused with Gotter’s Advent hymn of the same first line. It first appears (with a couple differences, as noted in square brackets) in Neuß’s Heb-Opfer zum Bau der Hütten Gottes (1692) with the date “anno 86” and its own proper melody (Zahn 2408 below). In our present hymnal is appointed to be sung to “Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt.”

THIS is a sure and precious word,
A word to cheer thee wholly:
The sinner’s hope is Christ the Lord,
He will instruct the lowly;
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s
hope is Christ the Lord.

2 Christ Jesus welcomes those who pine,
Heals those with sickness ridden,
No invitation will decline
If only He be bidden;
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s
hope is Christ the Lord.

3 Christ Jesus is the Shepherd true,
He seeks the wand’rer ever,
The lost He doth restore anew—
He is the chosen Savior;
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s
hope is Christ the Lord.

4 Thee, Christ, God’s Son, with praise I greet!
Thou borest our transgression, [Thou Bondsman for us debtors]
Thou Paschal Lamb, Thou Mercy-seat,
To weary Consolation; [Thou Refuge for us murd’rers]
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s
hope is Christ the Lord.

5 Oh, grant me that this grace I own,
Of all my sin repenting,
That I, Thy sheep, may long for Thee
With ardor unrelenting,
And think upon this precious Word:
The surest hope
is Christ the Lord. [The sinner’s hope . . .]

Das ist ein theures, werthes Wort,
ein Wort sehr lieb zu hören:
daß Jesus ist der Sünder Hort,
und will die Armen lehren.
Das ist ein theures, werthes Wort,
daß Jesus ist der Sünder Hort.

2 Mein Jesus nimmt die Kranken an, [Er, Jesus…]
er heilet allen Schaden;

er suchet, was verloren;
er holt zurücke, was verführt
er ist zum Heil erkoren;
das ist ein theures, werthes Wort,
das Jesus ist der Sünder Hort.

4 Lob sei dir, Jesu, Gottes Sohn,
