Gottseligkeit is kein Gewerbe

Here is my translation of the Christian Life (Godliness) hymn, “Gottseligkeit is kein Gewerbe” (Valentin Ernst Löscher, d. 1749) based on 1 Tim. 6:5, in GGELB #466 with melody assignment “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.” It is absent from Fischer’s lexicon. I find it in Das Andächtig-Singende Evangelische Zion (Zwickau, 1736), no. 771, with ascription “D. V. E. Löscher.”

TRUE godliness, says Scripture clearly,
Is not a thing of worldly gain;
It holds the better part most dearly
And doth all other things disdain;
The pure and spotless Word it loves
Above all earthly treasure-troves.

2 True godliness no ostentation
Pursues, nor seeks the praise of men,
Nor great renown, nor acclamation,
Nor doth it wit and rev’rence feign.
It is content its Maker knows
And sees the heart in chamber close.

3 True godliness no sect will follow;
In doctrine true it holdeth sure,
Though all the world in error wallow,
Its faith continues clean and pure.
In Jesus’ body it abides,
Though poor He seem, and there resides.

4 True godliness is not a dealing
Of our old Adam’s sinful will;
God gives new pow’r and selfless feeling,
That we His pleasure may fulfill,
And bear men’s burdens willingly,
And all things to all people be.

5 True godliness is no endeavor
That springs from melancholy drear;
’Tis confident, and watcheth ever
Lest any mournful sense appear;
Since God, joy’s Maker, it sustains,
O’er death and world it vict’ry gains.

6 True godliness a crown comprises
That doth our heartfelt faith adorn;
Oh, God! Grant me the pow’r that rises,
In Christ Thy Son, and Spirit-borne,
That I hereafter may possess
The glorious crown of righteousness!

GERMAN
Gottseligkeit ist kein Gewerbe,
das wissen wir aus Gottes Wort;
sie bleibt beim rechten Theil und Erbe
und weiset alles andre fort;
sie ist dem reinen Worte hold,
und liebt es für das feinste Gold.

2 Gottseligkeit ist kein Gepränge,
sie suchet nicht der Menschen Preis,
den großen Schein, des Beifalls Menge,
sie thut nicht übrig fromm und weis.
Ihr Trost ist der: Gott sieht hinein
ins Herz, und ins Schlafkämmerlein.

3 Gottseligkeit macht keine Sekte,
sie bleibet bei der wahren Lehr,
und wenn sich alle Welt befleckte,
so geht sie rein im Glauben her;

so hier der wahre Glaube schafft;
ach Gott! gib mir in deinem Sohne
durch deinen Geist die rechte Kraft,
daß ich erlange nach der Zeit
die Krone der Gerechtigkeit.

Halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ

Here is my supplemental translation (sts. 5–6) and alteration (lines 5–6 of each st.) of J. T. Mueller’s translation (Selah Song Book, 1920) of the Redeemer hymn (based on 1 Tim. 3:8), “halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ” (Cyriakus Günther, d. 1704), as found in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #212, and first appearing posthumously in Freylinghausen 1714 with the melody “Sei Lob und Ehr dem höchsten Gut,” but in the Wisc. hymnal with “Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir.”

HOLD in remembrance Christ the Lord,
Thy ever precious Savior;
Who came from heav’n, incarnate Word,
To be Thy Brother ever.
Forget it not: ’twas for thy good
That He took on thy flesh and blood:
O bless His love forever!

2 Hold in remembrance Christ the Lord,
And all His bitter suff’ring;
He died for thee, thee to afford
Salvation by His off’ring,
From sin, death, devil set thee free,
From hell and every misery!
O bless His love forever!

3 Hold in remembrance Christ the Lord,
The Victor who is risen!
Victorious, glorious, and adored,
He burst the grave’s dread prison.
Remember that He peace obtained,
His innocence thy life regained,
O bless His love forever!

4 Hold in remembrance Christ the Lord,
Who rose to heav’n in glory!
There to prepare, by Him restored,
A place of bliss before thee,
Where thou shalt live eternally
And there behold His majesty:
O bless His love forever!

5 Hold in remembrance Christ the Lord!
Who shall return from heaven,
By whom then shall the just reward
To quick and dead be given.
Think how thou wilt escape from woe,
And with Him to His kingdom go:
O bless His love forever!

6 Grant, Jesus, that I may to Thee
Cling in true faith forever,
And what Thou hast achieved for me
Let from my heart go never,
That there in all distresses I
May comfort find, and when I die,
Join Thee in life eternal.

Halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ,
o Mensch, der auf die Erden
von Thron des Himmels kommen ist,
da Bruder da zu werden!
Vergiß nicht daß er dir zu gut
hat angenommen Fleisch und Blut:
dank ihm für diese lLiebe.

2 Halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ,
der für dich hat gelitten,
ja gar am kreuz gestorben ist
und dadurch hat bestritten
Welt, Sünde, Teufel, Höll und Tod,
und dich erlöst aus aller Noth:
dank ihm für diese Liebe.

3 Halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ,
der auch am dritten Tage
siegreich vom Tod erstanden ist,
befreit von Noth und Plage.
Bedenke, daß er Fried gemacht,
sein Unschuld Leben wieder bracht:
dank ihm für diese Liebe.

4 Halt im Gedächtniß Jesum Christ,
der nach den Leidenszeiten
gen Himmel aufgefahren ist,
die Stätt dir zu bereiten,
da du sollst bleiben allzeit
und sehen seine Herrlichkeit:
dank ihm für diese Liebe.

5 Halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ!
der einst wird wiederkommen,
und sich, was todt und lebend ist,
zu richten vorgenommen.
O denke, daß du da bestehst,
und mit ihm in sein Reich eingehst,
ihm ewiglich zu danken.

6 Gieb, Jesu, gieb, daß ich dich kann
mit wahrem Glauben fassen,
und nie, was du an mir gethan,
mög aus dem Herzen lassen;
daß dessen ich in aller Noth
mich trösten mög und durch den Tod
zu dir ins Leben dringen.

Das ist ein theures, werthes Wort

Here is my translation of the Jesus/Redeemer hymn “Das ist ein theures, werthes Wort” (Heinrich Georg Neuß, 1686) based on 1 Tim. 1:16, included in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #139 in the section: “Offices and Life of Jesus.” It should not be confused with Gotter’s Advent hymn of the same first line. It first appears (with a couple differences, as noted in square brackets) in Neuß’s Heb-Opfer zum Bau der Hütten Gottes (1692) with the date “anno 86” and its own proper melody (Zahn 2408 below). In our present hymnal is appointed to be sung to “Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt.”

THIS is a sure and precious word,
A word to cheer thee wholly:
The sinner’s hope is Christ the Lord,
He will instruct the lowly;
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s
hope is Christ the Lord.

2 Christ Jesus welcomes those who pine,
Heals those with sickness ridden,
No invitation will decline
If only He be bidden;
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s
hope is Christ the Lord.

3 Christ Jesus is the Shepherd true,
He seeks the wand’rer ever,
The lost He doth restore anew—
He is the chosen Savior;
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s
hope is Christ the Lord.

4 Thee, Christ, God’s Son, with praise I greet!
Thou borest our transgression, [Thou Bondsman for us debtors]
Thou Paschal Lamb, Thou Mercy-seat,
To weary Consolation; [Thou Refuge for us murd’rers]
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s
hope is Christ the Lord.

5 Oh, grant me that this grace I own,
Of all my sin repenting,
That I, Thy sheep, may long for Thee
With ardor unrelenting,
And think upon this precious Word:
The surest hope
is Christ the Lord. [The sinner’s hope . . .]

Das ist ein theures, werthes Wort,
ein Wort sehr lieb zu hören:
daß Jesus ist der Sünder Hort,
und will die Armen lehren.
Das ist ein theures, werthes Wort,
daß Jesus ist der Sünder Hort.

2 Mein Jesus nimmt die Kranken an, [Er, Jesus…]
er heilet allen Schaden;

er suchet, was verloren;
er holt zurücke, was verführt
er ist zum Heil erkoren;
das ist ein theures, werthes Wort,
das Jesus ist der Sünder Hort.

4 Lob sei dir, Jesu, Gottes Sohn,
