Ihr Reichen, Christus kennt euch wohl

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ihr Reichen, Christus kennt euch wohl” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, the second of three hymns for Trinity I, titled “Admonition to hear God’s Word, especially among Temporal Goods,” a companion hymn to his third, which is addressed to the poor.

Mel.: O lux beata Trinitas.

YE rich men, Christ doth know you well,
No kitchens and no cellars swell
But God hath all their store conferred,
Yet ne’er without His Holy Word.

2 He knoweth well your heart and mind,
How lust for riches doth you bind,
Ye heed not in the proper way
What Moses and the Prophets say.

3 When ye are filled with food and drink,
Forget not God, but ever think:
The Lord it is hath given you
These goods, and thank His grace, as due.

4 And when ye see your neighbor poor
In his distress call at your door,
Deny him not his needs in love,
Lest at his cry God you reprove.

5 In sum, if rich ye chance to be,
God hath bestowed it graciously,
Wherefore hang not your heart thereon,
Which God would for His dwelling own.

6 So Moses and King David teach.
Whose heart and ears they cannot reach,
Must soon forsake all goods, and, cursed,
In flames of hell and torment thirst.

7 In truth, that certainly shall be,
Why live so many carelessly?
Then while time yet remains repent,
Or evermore your fate lament.

8 Here can ye still seek God in pray’r,
But Abr’ham’s cannot help you there.
Whoever asks God’s grace today
Shall find it granted him for aye.
