Here is my translation of the hymn, “Zum Osterfest alle die Jahr” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, originally appointed there for Sunday after New Year, though it is based on the text normally appointed for Sunday within the Octave of Epiphany. A final supplicatory stanza was added after the first edition. Gesius 1605 (which gives the hymn for Sunday after Epiphany) appoints the

AS Jesus’ parents, every year,
Whene’er the paschal feast drew near,
Went duly to Jerusalem,
At twelve years old, He went with them.

2 When they fulfilled the festal days,
They homeward turned by wonted ways,
And as they went they had no care,
But thought their Child was foll’wing there.

3 When one day’s journey they had gone—
’Twas only then they sought her Son
With kinsfolk and acquaintance true,
But none of little Jesus knew.

4 Then turned they back again, with care
Their Jesus seeking here and there,
And after three days’ searching round,
The Child was in the Temple found.

5 The doctors there He keenly heard,
And asked them of their Law and word,
And all that heard, at His response
And wisdom, were amazed at once.

6 His mother then addressed Him thus:
My Son, why dost Thou this to us?
For three days have thy fath’r and I
Sought Thee with many a sorr’wing sigh.

7 But why, said Jesus, sought ye Me?
Wist ye not that I must needs be
Concerned with those things that pertain
Unto My Father’s high domain?

8 But they His saying sharp and stern
Could understand not, nor discern,
But He arose and with them went
To Nazareth, obedient.

9 His Mother all these words divine
Kept in her heart, a treasure fine,
And Jesus grew and wisdom gained
And praise with God and men obtained.

*10 God, help us, that our children may
Be faithful, pious, and obey,
And we may bring them up with care,
To Thy acclaim and glory e’er.

Zum Osterfest alle die Jahr
zogen gen Jerusalem dar
die Eltern Jesu, und mit ihn
im zwölften Jahr zog Jesus hin.

2 Als nun das Fest sein Ende hat,
zogen sie heim in ihre Stadt,
und gingen ohn Sorg immerhin,
dachten, ihr Kind würd folgen ihn.

3 Als sie ein Tagreis kamen fort,
suchten sie erst an allem Ort
bein Freunden und Bekannten ihn,
niemand wußt von dem Jesulin.

4 Da kehrten sie bald wiederum,
und suchten Jesum um und um,
am dritten Tag es sich begab
im Tempel funden wurd der Knab.

5 Den Lehrern hört er zu mit Fleiß,
fragt sie auch um ihr Gsetz und Weis,
sein Red und Antwort jedermann,
und sein Verstand groß Wunder nahm.

6 Da ihn sein Mutter sitzen sach:
Mein Sohn, was thust du uns, sie sprach,
mit Schmerzen dein Vater und ich
haben drei Tag gesuchet dich.

7 Was ists, sprach Jesus, daß ihr mich
gesucht habt? Wißt ihr nicht, daß ich
mir muß lassen anglegen sein
die Ding, so sind des Vaters mein?

8 Aber diesen scharfen Bericht
verstunden da sein Eltern nicht,
doch stund er auf, ging mit ihn hin
gen Nazareth und ghorchet ihn.

9 Die Wort behielt die Mutter sein
und schloß sie in ihr Herz hinein.
Jesus aber wuchs und wurd weis,
hat bei Gott und den Menschen Preis.

*10 Hilf, Gott, daß unser Kinderlein
folgen, fromm und gehorsam sein,
und wir sie auch mit allem Fleiß
aufziehn zu deim Ehr, Lob und Preis.
