Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for the Sunday after Christmas (Sunday in the Octave of Christmas), which this year is superseded by the feast of the Holy Innocents so I give it on the Sunday after, which would otherwise be the Octave of Holy Innocents. Gesius 1605 appoints the

WHEN Mary’s purifying days
Accomplished were, as custom says
And Moses’ law, they followed them
And went up to Jerusalem.

2 Presenting Jesus to the Lord,
They kept the Law and written word.
Then entered agèd Simeon
And prophesied of Mary’s Son.

3 This Jesus, lo, thy child so small
Will make full many, offended, fall
And speak against this sign; likewise,
He will make many in faith arise.

4 A sword shall pierce through thy heart too,
And thou wilt see with sorrow true
How then the thoughts (remember me)
Of many hearts revealed shall be.

5 A seeress, Anna, what is more,
A widow fourscore years and four,
Prayed in the Temple day and night—
She in young Jesus took delight.

6 The Lord’s Messiah here she saw,
And so rejoiced with hearty awe,
And made it known throughout the land,
How Christ, th’ Anointed, was at hand.

7 When they had everything fulfilled
Which Moses bade, as God had willed,
As in the cov’nant old discerned,
They home to Galilee returned.

8 And so the little Christ-child grew,
Waxed strong in Spirit right and true,
And, filled with wisdom day by day,
God’s grace and hand upon Him lay.

*9 Lord Christ, help all men Thee receive,
Who now resist, nor will believe,
So may Thy reign grow far and wide,
And Thy dear name be glorified.

Mariä Zeit vorhanden ward,
daß sie sollt nach jüdischer Art
und Moses Gsetz sich reinigen,
da zog sie gen Jerusalem.

Und stallt Jesum den Herren dar,
wie im Gesetz geboten war,
da kam der alte SImeon
und weissagt von Marien Sohn

3 Dieser Jesus das Söhnelein,
ihr vielen wird ein Anstoß sein
und werden ihm fast widerstahn,
doch werden ihn viel nehmen an.

4 Ein Schwert durchschneiden wird dein Herz
und wirst erfahrn mit großem Schmerz
alsdann viel Herzen (denk{t} an mich)
werden selbs offenbaren sich.

5 Hanna ein Prophetinne war,
ein Wittfrau vier und achzig Jahr,
die bet im Tempel Tag und Nacht,
und gab aufs Kind Jesum gut Acht.

6 Erkannt, daß es Messias wär,
des freut sie sich von Herzen sehr,
und macht solchs jedermann bekannt,
sprach Messias wär vor der Hand.

7 Da sies nun alls hatten vollendt,
was in dem alten Testament
Moses zu thun befohlen hat,
zogen sie heim in ihre Stadt.

8 Es wuchs aber das Kindelein,
und wurd gestärkt im Geist gar fein,
nahm zu an Weisheit und Verstand,
Gotts Gnad war bei ihm und sein Hand.
