Heilig ist Gott, heilig sein Sohn

Here is my translation of the Trinity hymn, “Heilig ist Gott, heilig sein Sohn” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne, Geistliche Lieder for the feast of the Holy Trinity, titled “Chorus de sancta Trinitate [Chorus concerning the Holy Trinity] to be sung by two choirs to a special melody: The Angel Choir sings the first two lines of each stanza, and the Christian Choir responds in four voices.

GOD, Holy Father, Holy Son,
And Holy Ghost on heaven’s throne!
  This song the holy hosts intone;
  God grant us faith, His name to own!

2 He is your Maker, ye His own,
In whom His image brightly shone:
  God, Holy Father, Holy Son,
  And Holy Ghost on heaven’s throne!

3 The serpent hath mankind undone,
But God would not leave us to groan.
  God, Holy Father, Holy Son,
  And Holy Ghost on heaven’s throne!

4 The woman’s Seed was born—the One
Who o’er the serpent’s head hath run.
  God, Holy Father, Holy Son,
  And Holy Ghost on heaven’s throne!

5 Christ hath the Father’s pleasure done,
The Couns’lor will not you disown.
  In person Three, in essence One,
  God bring us there by Christ the Son!

6 God, Holy Father, Holy Son,
And Holy Ghost on heaven’s throne!
  We daily hear it, all and one!
  Amen! The Lord will see it done.
