O Ewigkeit! o Ewigkeit

Here is my translation of “O Ewigkeit! o Ewigkeit / o Höllenangst…” / “O Ewigkeit! o Ewigkeit, / o Himmelsfreud…” (Dr. J. Olearius, d. 1684), as found in his Geistliche Singekunst, two short, connected hymns appointed for the Gospel for Trinity I. They are notable for their lack of reference to themes of rich and poor found in several earlier hymns for Trinity I (Olearius here notes as the usual or de tempore hymns “Kommt her zu mir” and “Ach Gott vom Himmel”), as well as for their pervasive rhyme in “-eit,” which I simulate here with “-y / -ee.” Both hymns are assigned the same melody, and may reasonably be sung as bookends to the service or sermon.

ETERNITY! Eternity!
O hellish dread and agony!
O torment without remedy
Prepared for earth’s iniquity.

2 Whoever always ponders thee,
Flees error and iniquity,
That he may hence repentantly
Forsake all worldly vanity.

du bist ein Zirkul groß und weit,
