Wir danken dir Herr insgemein* (2nd version)

Here is a translation of the Epiphany hymn, Wir danken dir Herr insgemein (P. Hagen, 1642), from the version found in ELK #424. This is a shorter variant of the one already translated on Hymnoglypt, found here. I provide the tune recommended in ELK, Mir ist ein geistlich Kirchelein, but transposed to Am (the original key). The slur in the last phrase may also be on D-C rather than B-A.


WITH ONE accord we thank Thee, Lord
For that bright light, Thy blessed Word,
With which Thou hast beheld us here
And filled our fainting hearts with cheer.

2. We lay as captives in the thrall
Of death’s dark valley, one and all.
Dear Jesus, now our thanks receive,
Who didst redemption to us give.

3. True Man and Son of God, and King
Of glory! praise to Thee we bring,
For none of us, corrupt with sin,
Such love, such bounteous grace could win.

4. Thy Spirit guide us e’er, that we
May serve Thee with sincerity,
For Thou, beloved Lord, dost know
How powerless we are below.

5. Direct Thy light on us to shine
Until that Day of light divine;
Direct our step each hour to press
Upon the way to blessedness.

Wir danken dir, Herr, insgemein
für deines lieben Wortes Schein,
womit du uns hast angeblickt
und unser mattes Herz erquickt.

2. Wir saßen in des Todes Tal
sehr tief gefangen allzumal.
Dank hab, du liebster JEsu mein,
daß wir durch dich erlöset sein.

3. Du wahrer Mensch und Gottes Sohn,
du König aller Ehren schon,
niemand von uns verdienet hat
solch eine Lieb und große Gnad.

4. Dein guter Geist uns immer führ,
daß wir von Herzen dienen dir.
Du weißt, o lieber Herre mein,
wie wir so unvermögend sein.

5. Hilf, daß dein Licht uns leuchten mag
bis an den lieben Jüngsten Tag
und wir auch wandeln jederzeit
den rechten Weg zur Seligkeit.
