Der neugeborne König (st. 1–3, 8)

Here is my translation of the hymn “Der neugeborne König (Christus unser Herre)” (P. Herbert, 1566).

THE NEWBORN King appeareth,
Christ our Lord and Savior;
Our hearts today He cheereth
With His glorious favor:
Cry, every gentile nation,
To Him with jubilation:
“Gracious Lord, Redeemer!
Grant us all praise to render
To Thy glorious splendor.”

2. No birth was e’er anointed
With such grace and wonder,
No mortal man appointed
Thus the world to enter,
So pure in every manner,
Without the seed of sinner:
Gracious Lord, Redeemer!
Console us men so lowly,
Make us pure and holy.

3. Thou equal with the Father,
And with Him all-glorious,
From heaven camest hither,
All to suffer for us,
Impov’rished, stripped, and naked,
In linen rags forsaken:
Gracious Lord, Redeemer!
Let us to dust be driven,
And find wealth in heaven.

4. Thou wast in humble station,
Yet Lord God Almighty
Crowned Thy humiliation
With celestial beauty,
When angels shone around Thee,
With gladness to attend Thee:
Gracious Lord and Savior!
Let Thy word shine brightly,
That we praise Thee rightly.

8. With all the church we duly
Lift our pray’r; oh, hear it!
Regenerate us truly,
Daily, by the Spirit:
And may we then be given
Eternal joy in heaven:
Gracious Lord and Savior!
Repay our owing measure
From Thy grace’s treasure.

GERMAN
1. Der neugeborne König,
Christus unser Herre,
erfreut uns heut nicht wenig,
offenbart sein Ehre:
Darum frolockt, ihr Heiden,
und sprecht ihn an mit Freuden,
O gnadreicher Heiland,
verleih, daß wir dich preisen,
dir all Ehr beweisen.

2. Kein Mensch is nie geboren,
deß man so begehret,
keim ist solchs widerfahren,
der so unversehret
ganz ohn sündlichen Samen,
auf diese Welt wer kommen,
O gnadreicher Heiland:
du wollst auch unser Trost sein,
mach uns heilig und rein.

3. Du bist ja deim Vater gleich,
in Reichtum und Freuden,
doch kamst du vom Himmelreich
für uns hie zu leiden;
wollst bald arm, nackt und bloß sein,
ließ’st dich wickeln in Tüchlein,
O gnadreicher Heiland:
hilf uns leben in Demut,
schenk uns dein ewigs Gut.

4. Du warest wohl in Armut,
aber Gott der HErre,
ziert und schmückt deine Demut
mit göttlicher Ehre,
da die Engel erschienen,
dir mit Freuden zu dienen,
O gnadreicher Heiland:
du wollst uns auch jetzt lehren,
daß wir dich recht ehren.

8. Wir bitten erhör uns heut,
samt dein auserkoren,
hilf, daß wir in der Wahrheit
auch sind neugeboren:
darnach wollst uns auch geben
die Freud in jenem Leben,
O gnadreicher Heiland:
erstatt all unsren Schaden,
durch die Füll der Gnaden.

You've got one to many syllables in the second to last line. I do wonder also about that tune. The eighthh notes don't seem right half the time. Also, is there more than one stanza?

The staff lines correspond to poetry lines. There is a slur on the second to last line, corresponding to the syllable "la" in "jubilation." If you have suggestions about writing it properly, let me know. I just copied the music from Kirchengeseng (1560) There are 3 stanzas total.

Make that 8 stanzas total!
