Meine Seele bleibet stille

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Meine Seele bleibet stille” (E. Neumeister, 1710) from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, a hymn of comfort appointed for Fridays between the morning and evening devotions.

Mel.: Du o schönes Weltgebäude.

STILL and calm my soul abideth,

For it is in God content.

As His faithful mind decideth

How my days should here be spent,

So as He doth all things measure,

All my heart therein takes pleasure,

So that nothing else than He

Is the highest Good for me.

2 Must I many a cross be bearing

Here be mocked, and there abroad,

And the bread of tears be sharing,

I will wait upon my God.

All the evil storms I weather

For my good must work together,

And the cross be called a kiss

Of His love, and mark of bliss.

3 Evermore all fear subsideth,

He’s my shield and rock assured;

And my hope and trust abideth

Clinging to His precious Word.

Though in life I toss and welter,

Yet His hand will be my shelter,

So through perils great and small

No distress shall make me fall.

4 Let the world be glad and thriving

And on thick-laid roses go,

Let them for mere fame be striving

Seeking earthly heights below;

Let their wishing and desiring

Hang on Mammon without tiring,

And delight and wealth and fame

As their comforters acclaim.

5 They have nothing tempting for me,

God is my salvation whole,

My delight, adornment, glory,

Balm and portion of my soul,

Pasture, rest, and habitation,

Yea, my crown and jubilation

And my all is God alone,

Ne’er a thing can Him dethrone.

6 Though the devil’s works assail me

In the weakness of my faith,

He, my Rock, will never fail me,

He, my strength, remains till death,

Thus the hosts of hell defying,

I may stand unwav’ring, crying:

God, my confidence, is here,

And therefore I will not fear!

7 And will death at last be nearing,

Oh, how welcome he shall be!

He, to saints a friend most cheering,

Into heaven leadeth me,

That in paradise up yonder

I may see and taste with wonder

What God grants me surely here

To await in faith and fear.

8 Yes, to me is death a blessing,

And to die is greatest gain!

Come, to me thy step addressing,

Take me, O sweet death, from pain.

Oh, how joys my heart and spirit

To depart—I do not fear it—

And to go, my God to see:

Yet when God wills, let it be!

GERMAN

Meine Seele bleibet stille;

denn sie ist in Gott vergnügt.

Wie sein treuer Rath und Wille

es mit mir im Leben fügt:

also laß ich mirs in allen,

auch von Herzen wohl gefallen,

daß sonst nichts als er allein

mir das höchste Gut soll sein.

2 Sollte mich das Kreuze pressen,

wär ich aller Welt ein Spott,

müßt ich Brot der Thränen essen,

dennoch harr ich nur auf Gott.

Was mir böse hat geschienen,

muß zu meinem Besten dienen,

daß das Kreuz ein süßer Kuß

seiner Liebe heißen muß.

3 Nimmermehr soll mir nicht grauen;

denner ist mein Schutz und Hort.

Meine Hoffnung, mein Vertrauen

hält sich an sein theures Wort,

ob die Unglückswetter stürmen;

seine Hand wird mich beschirmen,

so daß auf der rauhen Bahn

mich kein Fall nicht stürzen kann.

4 Laß die Welt in Freuden leben,

und auf lauter Rosen gehn;

laß sie nur nach Ruhme streben

und nach hohen Dingen stehn;

laß ihr Wünschen und Verlangen

an dem schnöden Mammon hangen,

da sie Wollust, Ehr und Geld,

sich zu ihrem Troste stellt.

5 Mich soll nichts davon bethören.

Gott nun ist mein einzig Heil.

Mein Lust, mein Schmuck der Ehren,

meines Herzens Trost und Theil,

meine Krone, meine Freude,

meiner Seelen Ruh und Weide,

und mein Alles muß allein Gott

und sonst nichts anders sein.

6 Fechten auch des Teufels Werke

mich bei schwachem Glauben an;

er, der Felsen meiner Stärke,

macht, daß ich sie trotzen kann.

Ja, das ganze Heer der Höllen

mag sich mir entgegen stellen;

Gott ist meine Zuversicht,

und darum erschreck ich nicht.

7 Will der Tod auch endlich kommen;

ach er soll willlkommen sein.

Er, der beste Freund der Frommen,

führet mich zum Himmel ein,

daß ich da im Paradiese,

nun im Schauen auch genieße,

was mich Gott gewiß und fest

hier im Glauben hoffen läßt.

8 Ja, der Tod ist mir ein Segen

und das Sterben mein Gewinn.

Komm, ich gehe dir entgegen,

süßer Tod, un nimm mich hin!

O wie wohl ist mir zu Muthe!

Gerne noch in der Minute

stürb ich, meinen Got zu sehn.

Doch wenn Gott will, mags geschehn.

Schliesset euch ihr Augen auf

Here is my translation of the hymn “Schliesset euch ihr Augen auf” (B. Schmolck, 1715), appointed in the author’s Morgen- und Abend-Andachten for Friday morning.

Mel.: Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.

OPEN, ye mine eyes, and view
In the sky earth’s eye adorning,
Wishing by his course anew
As your lamp to light the morning;
Lo, the sun doth mount the sky,
Pointing you to God on high!

2 Let your first and blessed sight
Be to Zion’s heights ascending;
Now review the bygone night,
Brought by God to blessed ending.
Oh, deserves not such a God
Evermore thy praise and laud?

3 Lord of hosts, Thy faithfulness
Which like shelt’ring wings lay o’er me,
I anew this day possess,
Which Thou hast created for me;
Oh, what shall I give to Thee?
Let myself Thy off’ring be!

4 If I Thy possession am,
Let Thy care this day attend me;
To the glory of Thy name
In Thy love and blessing send me.
Well advise my word and deed,
Let all prosp’rously proceed.

5 Open let Thy heav’n remain
When my heart to Thee ascendeth;
Let my groanings entrance gain,
When distress or ill impendeth;
Speak a gracious word to me:
“Fear thee not, I am with thee.”

6 Radiance of Thy grace supply,
Keep me ever, without ceasing,
As the apple of Thine eye,
Guide me with count’nance pleasing;
Ever be my Shield and Sun;
Yet Thy will in all be done.

7 Let me not be stained within,
Nor against my conscience wander;
Lock and bar the door to sin,
Help me watch and pray and ponder;
For Thou only know’st if I
Shall be made this day to die.

8 So I cast myself on Thee;
Thou canst in all things sustain me;
With Thy hand support Thou me,
When my cross and troubles pain me;
Hour by hour till day is o’er,
Lord, amend me more and more.

GERMAN

Schliesset euch ihr Augen auf,
denn das Auge dieser Erden
will durch seinen neuen Lauf
euch zur Morgenfackel werden.
Seht die Sonne geht euch vor,
und weist euch zu Gott empor.

2 Lasset euren ersten Blick
sich nach Zions Höhe wenden.
Sehet auf die Nacht zurück,
die Gott half so glücklich enden.
Ach, ein solcher Gott verdient,
daß sein Lob beständig grünt.

3 Herr Zebaoth deine Treu
hat wie Flügel mich bedecket,
und jetzt wird sie wieder neu,
da du mich hast aufgewecket,
ach was geb ich dir dafür?
Ich verehr mich selber dir.

4 Bin ich nun dein Eigenthum,
so versorge mich auch heute,
daß zu deines Nahmens Ruhm,
Lieb und Segen mich begleite.
Was ich thun und reden soll
alles dies gerathe wohl.

5 Laß den Himmel offen sein,
wenn mein Herz sich zu dir hebet,
und laß meine Seufzer ein,
wenn die Noth vor Augen schwebet.
Sprich ein gnädigs Wort zu mir;
fürcht dich nicht, ich bin mit dir.

6 Gib mir deinen Gnadenschein,
lasse mich zu allen Zeiten
deiner Augen Apfel sein,
und dein Antlitz mich stets leiten.
Sei mir immer Sonn und Schild,
sonsten mach es wie du willt.

7 GIb, daß ich kein Brandmal nicht
ins Gewissen heute mache.
Schieb der Sünden Riegel für,
hilf mir, daß ich bet und wache;
denn wer weiß, ob diesen Tag
nicht mein Ende kommen mag.

8 Nun ich werfe mich auf dich,
du kannst alles übertragen.
Deine Hand erhalte mich,
wenn mich Kreuz und Unglück plagen.
Kommt der Abend denn herbei,
gib, daß ich gebessert sei.
