Mit lautem Schall frohlocken wir

Here is my translation of the Ascension hymn, "Mit lautem Schall frohlocken wir” (Johann Adolph Schlegel, d. 1793), in NEGB #67 for Ascension Day with melody assignment “Es ist gewißlich an der Zeit.” The text matches that of the Neu. Ev. Gsb. of Regensburg  (1783). It is a reworking of Zwick’s older chorale, “Auf diesen Tag bedenken wir” (q.v.).

 

WITH shouts of gladness let us tell:
The Lord is now ascended!
Though still in misery we dwell,
By dangers oft attended,
Our courage is not sunken low;
Through Christ we know where we shall go
In this our pilgrim-journey.

2 Now life is brought into the light
And heav'n unbarred forever.
’Twas opened by the glorious might
Of Christ, our Lord and Savior.
He’ll take up us to Him some day;
Meanwhile He wills that on His way
We should be ever going.

3 Who in His way declines to go,
Shall not receive salvation.
A heaven locked the Lord shall show,
Yea, utter condemnation!
Whoever would in heaven live,
Let him by works a witness give
That he in heaven walketh.

4 Now more and more with one accord
We are from earth estranged,
Love ever what doth please the Lord,
And live as He arranged.
If thus we here complete our race,
The Lord will take us up in grace
Into his blissful kingdom.

5 O day abounding in all joy!
When comes thy blessed morrow?
Thou mak'st us like the hosts on high

Der Herr ist aufgefahren.
Wir sind zwar noch im Elend hier,
und unter viel Gefahren:
doch sinkt durm unser Muth nicht hin;
durch Jesum wissen wir wohin
uns unsre Wallfahrt führe.

2 Das Leben ist ans Licht gebracht;
der HImmel steht uns offen!
Ihn schloß uns auf mit großer Pracht,
der Herr, auf den wir hoffen.
Er hebt uns einst zu sich empor,
doch will er, daß wir hier zuvor
auf seinem Pfade wandeln.

3 Wer den nicht geht, wird nimmermehr
dort seines Heils genießen.
Wer ihm nicht folgt, dem wird auch er
den Himmel einst verschließen.
Wer wünscht in Himmel einzugehn,

Auf diesen Tag bedenken wir (Alt, Repost, Fix)

Here I present an alteration and expansion of Miss Winkworth’s translation of the Ascension hymn “Auf diesen Tag bedenken wir” (J. Zwick, 1538), appointed for said feast in Ludecus (1589) and many other hymnals besides. I have translated the formerly lacking 3rd stanza, and heavily reworked the last to match the sense of the original more closely. This work was done in 2008. For this latest repost, I considered altering the first lines more literally thus:

This day let us in heart recall
That Christ to heav’n ascended,
And thank our God in heaven’s hall,
And pray Him to defend us

But I have left Winkworth’s words where possible, and included her original words below the German. I have also translated a missing 6th stanza, and restored the proper melody with Alleluias. (Layriz seems to have cut off the Alleluia and appointed “Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr.”)



TODAY Our Lord went up on high,
And so our thanks we render:
To Him with strong desire we cry
To be our great Defender;
For we poor sinners here beneath
Are dwelling still mid woe and death.
All trust to Him we tender.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

2. Praise God that now the way is made!
In that great gate of Heaven
Hath Christ, on whom our help was laid,
A splendid passage riven,
Who knoweth this is glad at heart,
And swift prepares him to depart
