Weine nicht, Gott lebet noch (der…)

Here is my translation of the hymn “Weine nicht, Gott lebet noch (der…)” by Amadeus Kreuzberg, an alias of Philipp Balthasar Sinold, named von Schütz. It was written and adopted by hymnals as early as 1710. A similarly titled hymn by Benjamin Schmolck, “Weine nicht, Gott lebet noch (du…).” Fisher says, “Despite scattered echoes, the hymn is completely distinct.” A heterometrical translation by Borthwick of Schmolck’s hymn is available. However, and our present hymn is listed first in Fischer’s Kirchenlieder-Lexicon, where it states that it was appointed for the XVI. Sunday after Trinity, based on the Gospel Luke 7:13. The appointed tune is “Straf mich nicht in deinem Zorn.”

DO NOT weep! Thy God lives yet,
And loves thee sincerely;
Though the yoke of grief be great
And afflict thee dearly,
Faithful be
Till thou see
Hours of sorrow broken
By His blessing spoken.

2 Do not weep! God thinks of thee
Though thou Him forgettest;
He is hidden frequently
When thy grief seem greatest;
So keep faith,
Not from wrath
Do these things betide thee—
’Tis His love doth chide thee.

3 Do not weep, though He demur
At thy sad lamenting;
At His door pursue thy cure,
Knock without relenting;
Patience prove,
Till His love
God the Father give thee,
And in heart relieve thee.

4 Do not weep if with His hand
He the more chastises;
Here it is the best to stand
When a cross arises;
Blest are they
In this way
Living poor and lowly—
’Tis their beauty holy.

5 Do not weep, but with good will
Bear Christ’s yoke supplied thee;
When God strikes, He loves thee still,
He is close beside thee,
When in cross
Pain and loss
Often times oppress us—
Till His arms embrace us.

6 Do not weep, for He cannot
Long from thee stay hidden;
Wrath divine, which now seems hot,
Soon may be o’erridden!
Have that mind
Children find
When their mothers scold them,
That they soon may hold them.

7 Do not weep when in thy bed
God by sickness lays thee;
Rather let thy thanks be said;
Thus His mercies grace thee;
For thy God
By the rod
Would from snares unbind us
Which the foe has twined us.

8 Do not weep when thou must part
With thy wealth and treasure;
God would thereby teach thy heart
That in greater measure
Riches, wealth,
Life, and health
None may steal or squander
Wait in heaven yonder.

9 Do not weep! Thy mighty Lord
Freely can sustain thee;
He Himself is thy Reward
Leave Him to maintain thee;
He will give
Means to live
Field and vine sustaining
By His own ordaining.

10 Do not weep when all mankind
Of their love deprive thee;
Favor of the fickle mind
Often must deceive thee;
Men are like
Winds that strike:
Now good breeze they give thee,
Soon they flee and leave thee.

11 Do not weep when all the world
Slanders, scorns, and mocks thee
When the foe, with insults hurled,
Ever hounds and stalks thee;
Let thy heart
Hold that art
Taught thee by the Savior,
Learn His meek behavior.

12 Do not weep, though here thy name
Be accounted lowly;
Think how those who lust for fame
Flout God’s honor holy.
Here despised,
Yonder prized,
Thou wilt find supplied thee
More than here denied thee.

13 Do not weep! Thou hast the One
Who has thee elected;
What, if it will all be gone?
Thou art not rejected;
Pain and grief
Here are brief
Yet by them is given,
Greater love of heaven.

14 Only weep for all the debts
Of thy heart unruly,
For thy asking Jesus waits,
Who loves men most truly;
Weep as one
Who would own
Servant-like, his straying,
Oft his Lord betraying.

15 Weep and weep both day and night
For at sinners’ weeping
And repentant sighs, the light
Of God’s love comes leaping!
Would thy heart
Fain depart
From thy sins unsightly?
Then thou weepest rightly.

GERMAN

1 Weine nicht, Gott lebet noch,
der dich herzlich liebet;
ob das schwere Sorgenjoch
gleich dein Herz betrübet;
ach! so sei
nur getreu,
bis die Trauerstunden
selig überwunden.

2 Weine nicht, Gott denkt an dich,
wenn dus nicht gedenkest.
Oftermals verbirgt er sich,
so, daß du dich kränkest.
Das geschicht
aber nicht
aus des Zornes Triebe,
sondern nur aus Liebe.

3 Weine nicht, wenn er dein Flehn
nicht sobald erhöret,
bleib nur vor der Türe stehn,
klopf unabgekehret.
Hab Geduld,
bis die Huld
deines Vaters eilet,
und dein Herze heilet.

4 Weine nicht, wenn seine Hand
immer stärker schläget:
dieses ist der beste Stand,
wenn sich Kreuz erreget.
Wenn ein Christ
elend ist,
denn lebt er beglücket
und ist recht geschmücket.

5 Weine nicht, und nimm das Joch
deines Jesu gerne.
Wenn Gott schlägt, so liebt er doch,
denn er ist nicht ferne,
wenn die Qual
uns einmal
unterm Kreuze dränget,
bis er uns empfänget.

6 Weine nicht, er kan dich ja
nicht gar lange lassen,
denn er ist am ersten da,
wenn er scheint zu hassen.
Wie ein Kind
Liebe findt,
wenn die Mutter scherzet,
zürnt, und bald drauf herzet.

7 Weine nicht, wenn Gott dich krank
auf das Bette leget:
sag vielmehr der Güte Dank,
die ihn so beweget,
daß er sucht
dich durch Zucht
aus des Satans Stricken
zu sich hinzurücken.

8 Weine nicht, wenn Gelt und Gut
sich von dir entfernet,
weil Gott dieses alles tut,
daß dein Herze lernet,
wie dein Schatz,
Ziel und Platz
nicht beim Weltgetümmel,
sondern dort im Himmel.

9 Weine nicht, Gott kann dich schon
ohne Geld erhalten:
er ist selbst dein großer Lohn:
laß du ihn nur walten.
Korn und Wein
ist ja sein,
er wird dir zum Leben,
was nur nötig, geben.

10 Weine nicht, wenn Menschengunst
von dir abgezogen:
dieser eitle Wahn und Dunst
hat dich oft betrogen.
Menschen sind
wie ein Wind,
der bald heftig streichet,
und bald wieder weichet.

11 Weine nicht, wenn dich die Welt
lästert, schmäht und höhnet:
wenn der Feinde Zunge bellt,
so sey du gewöhnet,
daß dein Sinn
sich dorthin
zu dem Heiland kehret,
die die Sanftmut lehret.

12 Weine nicht, wirst du schon hier
ganz für nichts geschätzet:
denke, daß die Ehrbegier
Gottes Thron verletzet.
Hier verlacht,
dort geacht,
da wird die versüsset,
was du hier gebüsset.

13 Weine nicht! Du hast ja den,
der dich auserwählet;
laß es, wie es gehet, gehn,
bleib nur ungequälet.
Dieser Zeit
kurzes Leid
bringt nur Lust den Frommen,
die zu Jesu kommen.

14 Weine nur um deine Schuld,
die du ausgeübet,
bitte Jesum um Geduld,
der die Menschen liebet.
Weine recht,
als ein Knecht,
der mit bösen Taten
seinen Herrn verraten.

15. Weine, weine Tag und Nacht:
denn der Sünder Weinen
und ihr büßend Seufzen macht
Gottes Huld erscheinen.
Wein dein Geist
Reu erweist
und es ernstlich meinet,
hast du recht geweinet.
