Herr Gott in deinem höchsten Thron

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Herr Gott in deinem höchsten Thron” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm XXI, Domine in virtute, with title “Psalm of thanksgiving concerning the glory and eternal kingdom of Christ and victory over all His enemies.” The Aeolian melody provided by Waldis is built on his own extended German hymn meter, 887.887.88.77, used several times throughout the Psalter, and evidently nowhere before. The melody was later included the hymnals of Strassburg, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, and even Stockholm, there with the Swedish text “Hvad Herren äskar, hvad är rätt.” I give the melody transposed down a little.

LORD God, in heaven’s highest throne,
How highly Christ the King, Thy Son,
With Thee is glorifièd!
His every wish to Him Thou giv’st,
Withholdest not His lips’ request,
For which His heart hath sighèd.
Thy grace and blessing Thou hast spread
And crown of gold, upon His head,
And didst His asking favor
With life, and that forever.

2 With help and praise Thou dost Him bless,
So all the world to Him shall press,
And fittingly adore Him.
Thou makest Him the Mercy-seat,
All things with joy His advent greet,
And must bow down before Him,
And all to Him must subject be,
And bring this King their heartfelt plea,
Whose reign shall be forever;
None e’er shall move the Savior!

3 Thy right hand sorely doth reprove
Those who would fain this King remove,
In hatred Him disdaining;
In wrath Thou shutt’st to them Thy door,
So that they perish evermore,
Thou leavest none remaining.
Their fruit and all they have devised,
And all they teach against the Christ,
Thou shalt root out completely,
And mock their doings meetly.

4 All who have evil ’gainst Thee thought,
Thou didst lay low and turn to naught,
Thy just accounting keeping;
Didst on their back Thy burden place,
And heap on them shame and disgrace,
Their sin with sorrow reaping.
But to Thy King Thou givest strength,
And rule of eternal length;
So for these gifts of favor
We’ll sing Thy praise forever.

¶ To God Almighty glory be,
Who made all things most wondrously,
Our great and kind Creator;
And to His Son, who did us save
From evil, sin, hell, and the grave,
And is our Mediator;
And to the Holy Spirit, who
From sin and shame doth us renew,
Who walk in Him confiding,
In faith in Him abiding.

Wie ist der könig Christ dein Son,
So hoch bei dir erkleret,
Was er wündschet gibst im zu stund,
Weigerst nit was dich bit sein mundt,
Und was sein hertz begeret,
Dein güt und segen muß Er han,
Setzt auff sein haupt ein guldin kron,
Er bit dich umb das leben,
Das wilt im Ewig geben.

2 Gibst im dein hülff und ewig ehr,
Daß alle welt dring zu im her,
Mit lob thustu in schmucken:
Hast in zum gnadenstul gesetzt,
In im sichs frewt und alls ergetzt,
Und muß sich vor im bucken,
Auch im all werden underthan,
Denselben König betten an,
Der wirt wol Ewig bleiben,
Wer wil sich an in reiben?

3 Es straffts gar hart dein rechte hand,
Die dem König thun widerstandt,
Und sein Reich wöllen hassen:
Verstossest sie in deinem zorn,
Daß sie Ewig werden verlorn,
Wirst keynen leben lassen,
Ir frucht und all irn menschen tandt,
Auch was sie leren allesant,
Das wirstu gar außrotten,
Und all ir thun verspotten.

4 All die böß anschläg han bedacht,
Die hastu all zu nicht gemacht,
Daß sie jetz leiden müssen:
Dein last auff ire schultern glegt,
Mit scham und schand hast sie bedeckt,
Müssens mit schaden büssen,
Aber deim König gibstu krafft,
Hast im ein Ewig Reich verschafft,
Für solch Himlische gaben,
Wölln wir dich Ewig loben.

¶ Preiß sei dem almechtigen Got,
Der im anfang erschaffen hat,
Alls in himel und erden:
Seim Son der uns erlöst auß gnad,
Von allem unglück, sünd und todt,
Und wolt der mitler werden,
Dem Heilgen geyst dem tröster gut,
Der uns für sünd und schand behüt,
All die wir im vertrawen,
Im glauben auff in bawen.

Hoch freuet sich der König

 Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Hoch freuet sich der König” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm XXI, Domine in virtute, with melody assignment: “Herr Gott, nun sei gepreiset.” Luther writes of the psalm, “It is a prophecy of Christ’s kingdom, which shall be and abide eternally and spiritually before God. At the same time, he also announces that the kingdom of the Jews shall be destroyed, because they strove against the will of God and crucified the King; hence they are now made debtors, who forever suffer and gain nothing thereby (v. 13). It pertains to the First Commandment and the Second Petition, for it announces a new worship and kingdom of God.”

THE King, O Lord, rejoices,
In all Thy strength outpoured;
Yea, greatly he rejoices
That Thou dost help afford.
For Thou of Thy volition
Hast granted his petition
And giv’n his heart’s desire.

2 With treasures of Thy blessing
Thou crownest Thy dear Son,
His head most fitly dressing
With heaven’s golden crown.
He asked life as a favor;
Forever and forever
Thou gav’st Him length of days.

3 Thy saving help hath won Him
Great glory for all time,
Which Thou didst lay upon Him
With majesty sublime.
The blessing to inherit,
Eternal joy to merit,
Thou hast appointed Him.

4 His hope and trust He setteth
On Thee, the Lord most high;
Firm ground thereby He getteth;
From foes He need not fly.
Thou shalt as captives bind them,
Yea, Thy right hand shall find them—
All those who hate Thee, God!

5 Thy wrath shall overpow’r them,
Whenso Thy heart discerns;
The fire shall then devour them
Which from Thine anger burns;
From all their secret places
Thou shalt destroy all traces
Of all their name and seed.

6 They in their mind intended
To do Thee many an ill,
And Thee with strokes offended,
According to their will;
But in Thy hand Thou holdest
All men, and e’en the boldest
Must forfeit at the last.

7 Thy hand they shall be feeling,
Thine arrows on them trained
Shall send their faces reeling,
Thy will shall be obtained;
Lord, show Thy strength and glory
And we will sing Thy story
And praise Thy pow’r in song.

Das wiltu ihm auch geben,
Immer und ewiglich.

Das wird ihn nicht gerawen,
Er bleibt feſt in der Noth.
Die Feinde nicht beſtehen,
Deiner Hand nicht entgehen,
Alle, die haſſen dich.

5  Dein Zorn ſie wird umbbringen,
Wenn du wirſt ſehen drein,
Es wird ſie all verſchlingen,
Das Fewr des Grimmes dein,
Und tilgen ihren Namen,
Daß auch von ihrem Samen
Nichts mehr auff Erden ſey.

6  Ubels ſie dir gedachten
Zu thun in ihrem Sinn,
Davon groß Anſchlag machten,
Als wenn es ſtünd bey ihnn.
Es ſthet in deinen Händen,
Drumb werden ſies nicht enden,
Sie müſſens bleiben lan.

7  Dein Hand ſie werden fühlen,
Dein Pfeil auff ſie gericht
Gegen ihr Antlitz zielen,
Gewiß ſie fehlen nicht.
Dein Krafft HERR wolſt beweiſen,
So wollen wir hoch preiſen
Dein Macht mit Lobgeſang.
