Als dreiunddreißig Jahr alt war

Here is my translation of the Passion hymn “Als drei und dreissig Jahr alt war” (L. Helmbold), a concise narration of the Passion in the manner of Heyden and Gerhardt, but with shorter and fewer stanzas, thus more easily used in congregational setting (perhaps as the chief hymn on Judica Sunday). The title originally read: “Passion Hymn, of the Suffering and Death of Our Lord and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, to the melody ‘Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir,’ Isaiah: 53: By His wounds we are healed. John 1: Behold, this is the Lamb of God which bears the sin of the world.” That melody is provided here.

WHEN three and thirty years had passed
Since Christ our Lord’s appearing,
His Passion was begun at last,
To prophecy adhering—
To save all men and bring them bliss:
Oh, that the world might ponder this,
And thank God for His mercy!

2 The paschal lamb, His type and sign,
With His disciples sharing,
He founds for us a Feast divine,
The famished soul repairing:
In wine His blood, in bread His flesh
He gives them, and their feet doth wash,
True love and service teaching.

3 He in the Garden kneels to pray,
Submitting to His Father;
His foll’wers, filled with great dismay,
Fall sleeping altogether;
Great drops of sweat as blood doth yield.
At Judas’ kiss He’s marked and sealed;
They seize and bind Him roughly.

4 To Annas and to Caiaphas
They take Him to be questioned;
He answers not when witnesses
Produce their lies ill-fashioned;
He claims the Son of God to be,
And suffers scorn and mockery,
All night and till the morning.

5 To Pilate He is dragged along,
And with false crimes is chargèd;
Well Pilate sees how they do wrong,
And yet has Jesus scourgèd;
At last the people’s wrath he stems,
And having washed his hands, condemns
The Lord to crucifixion.

6 Upon the cross they nail Him bare,
Between two thieves to languish;
He cries to God in grief and care,
Creation reels in anguish.
Christ says, “’Tis finished!” and commends
His Spirit to His Father’s hands,
And bows His head in dying.

7. Then Joseph, counting all as loss,
True fear of God possessing,
Removes Christ’s body from the cross,
His limbs in spices dressing,
And lays Him in a new-made tomb,
To rest until the third day come,
And keep His Sabbath holy.

8 All this, according to God’s Word,
Was done for our transgression:
Before our God we stand assured
And make our firm confession:
He was chastised to bring us peace:
God grant us that our faith increase
In all His love and favor!

GERMAN

Als dreiunddreißig Jahr alt war
Jesus Christ, unser Herre,
stallt er sich zu seim Leiden dar
nach vorgeschehner Lehre,
zu’rlösen das menschlich Geschlecht:
ach, daß es alle Welt bedächt
und Gott der Gnaden danket!

2 Das Osterlamm, welchs ihn bedaut,
aß er mit seinen Jüngern,
stifft ein neus Nachtmal klar und laut,
darnach uns all soll hungern:
Sein Leib im Brot, sein Blut im Wein
er allen gibt und wäscht sie rein,
lehrt rechten Dienst und Liebe.

3 Im Garten zu dem Vater ruft,
doch daß sein WIll geschehe.
Der Jünger Herz trauret und schläft,
von Herrn blutig Schweiß gehet;
Durch Judas Kuß er ausgemalt,
wird angefallen mit Gewalt
und mörderisch gebunden.

4 Für Hannas und für Caiphas
fragt man ihn um sein Lehre,
viel falsch Gezeugnis geht aus Haß,
an keins der Herr sich kehret,
Sat nur, er sei wahr Gottes SOhn,
des muß er leiden SPott und Hohn
die Nacht bis an den Morgen.

5 Da wird er vor Gericht gestallt,
Pilatus hört die Klage,
sieht wohl, daß sie ihm tun Gewalt,
läßt ihn doch gleichwohl plagen,
endlich ein falsches Urteil spricht,
damit dem Volk genug geschicht,
verdammt Jesum zum Kreuze.

6 Daran ist er gehangen bloß,
Schächer auf beiden Seiten,
ruft zu Gott in der Marter groß,
die Welt wollt gehn zu Scheitern.
Bald Christus spricht, ‘Es ist vollbracht,’
befiehlt sein Geist ins Vaters Macht,
neigt das Haupt und verscheidet.

7 Joseph, ein Gottfürchtiger Mann,
der von Arimathia,
den Leib des Herrn vom Kreuze nahm,
salbt ihn mit Spezereie,
und legt ihn in ein neues Grab,
da bleib er an den dritten Tag,
heilgt den grossen Sabbath.

8 Dies alles nach der Schrift geschehn
um unser Sünde willen,
dadurch wir nu vor Gott bestehn,
des wir uns trösten sollen:
Die Straf auf ihm ist unser Fried,
Gott helf uns, daß wir seine Lieb
glauben und preisen. Amen.
