Here is my translation of the hymn “Ich danke dir, mein Gott, / daß du ein Mensch geboren” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Advent I, Gospel.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

I THANK Thee, O my God,
That Thou, my King and Savior,
Wast born a Man, that I
Might not be lost forever.
Now justly I rejoice
Because Thou com’st to me,
And say’st by Thine own Word:
O Zion, joyful be!

2 I thank Thee that Thou, Lord,
Hast me redeemed and savèd,
And won me righteousness,
Who wholly was depravèd.
My crown Thy entry is,
My wealth Thy poverty.
Therefore Thy flock as one
Hosanna sing to Thee.

3 Abide with me, my God,
Thy Word let guide and rule me,
Then shall no erring way
Aggrieve, deceive, or fool me,.
Come to me by Thy Word,
When throes of death increase,
Bring me through death to life,
Yea, to the City_of Peace.

4 Come for my balm and joy
When ends this world’s brief story,
When no more shall abide
Heav’n, earth, and goods, and glory;
Bring me into Thy realm,
Thy glory_and majesty,
My King, that there I may
Praise Thee eternally!

Ich danke dir, mein Gott,
daß du ein Mensch geboren,
mein König, daß ich nicht
soll ewig sein verloren,
weil du selbst kommst zu mir,
so freu ich billich mich,
weil du selbst durch dein Wort
sprichts: Zion, freue dich.

2 Ich danke dir, daß du
mein Helfer mir erworben
Heil und Gerechtigkeit,
da ich ar ganz verdorben,
dein Einzug ist mein Ehr,
dein Armuth macht mich reich,
drum Hosianna dir
dein Volk singt allzugleich.

3 Bleib ja bei mir, mein Gott,
laß mich dein Wort regieren,
so wird kein Irrweg mich
betrüben noch verführen,
komm zu mir durch dein Wort,
komm in der letzten Noth,
bring mich zur Friedensstadt
ins Leben durch den Tod.

4 Komm mir zu Trost und Freud,
wenn diese Welt vergehet,
wenn Himmel, Erde, Gut
und Ehr nicht mehr bestehet,
und führ mich in dein Reich
zu deiner Herrlichkeit,
mein König, daß ich dich
