Jesus rufet: Folgt mir nach!

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Jesus rufet: Folgt mir nach!” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for the feast of St. Andrew. Since Advent I falls on the 30th of November this year, that feast is postponed and observed on Monday, the First of December.

Mel.: Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier. 

FOLLOW Me, thy Jesus cries,
Follow Me in shame and sadness!
Shame is followed by the prize,
After sadness follows gladness.
Follow Me, though death thou merit,
Wilt thou life with Me inherit!

2 Dearest Jesus! That we may
Follow Thee with spirits willing,
Stir us up from day to day,
Hearts with grace and blessing filling,
That we ever may victorious
Break all hindrances before us.

3 Willing may the spirit be;
Clearer yet, as life grows longer,
We the flesh’s weakness see,
Yet wilt Thou but make us stronger,
To contend, bold faith bestowing,
Prosp’rous then shall be the going.

4 Now, we follow! Lead Thou best,
Through all tumults tossed and driven,
From the restless into rest,
From the earthly into heaven!
By Thy hands the way attending,
We shall reach the blessed ending.

Jesus rufet: Folgt mir nach!
Folgt mir nach in Schmach und Leiden.
Ehre folget auf die Schmach.
Auf das Leiden folgen Freuden.
Folge mir nach auch bis zum Sterben,
wenn ihr wollt das Leben erben.

2 Liebster Jesu, daß wir dir
alle willig folgen mögen,
so erwecke die Begier;
und verleihe Gnad und Segen,
daß wir alles überwinden,
wenn sich Hindernis will finden.

3 Ach! zwar willig ist der Geist;
doch wir können auch wohl merken,
was des Fleisches Schwachheit heißt.
Aber wirst du uns nur stärken,
muthig und getrost zu ringen,
so wird alles wohl gelingen.

4 Nun, wir folgen. Führe du
mitten durch das Weltgetümmel,
aus der Unruh in die Ruh,
von der Erden in den Himmel.
Also wird an deiner Händen
unser Weg sich selig enden.
