Ob kommen sei, der kommen soll

Here is my translation of the hymn “Ob kommen sei, der kommen soll” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for Advent III, with title “Hymn of proof and comfort that the promised Messiah is come, Matt. 11.”

Mel.: Conditor alme siderum.

THAT He is come whom seers foretell,
Is known to John the Baptist well,
Who knew Him at the Jordan’s flood,
Whose lips and finger owned Him God.

2 But few believed the tidings sent,
Thus for a mightier testament
He sendeth two disciples forth,
Themselves to see and hear His worth.

3 To them, at their great inquiry,
An answer in His deeds they see,
And haste to bring their master dear
The evidence of eye and ear.

4 The lame can walk, the blind can see
The lepers’ limbs from stain are free,
The deaf regain their hearing pow’r,
The dead forsake their gloomy bow’r.

5 And to the lowly of the world
The living Gospel rings unfurled!
Whose heart no stumbling makes in Me,
Saith Christ the Master, blest is he!

6 By this it is attested well
That this is He whom seers foretell,
Who doth fulfill the prophets’ word
And by His deeds is proven Lord.

7 The Scripture brings Him to the poor
Who suffer want and heartache sore;
They are His own, He doth them save;
The faithful hope and healing have.

8 This be our comfort and relief
In divers trials, cross, and grief:
The Christ, who once did visit thus
Eternal favor shows to us.

9 Praise be to God the Father, then,
And His dear Son, sent down to men,
And th’ Holy Spirit equally
In earth and heav’n eternally! Amen.

Ob kommen sei, der kommen soll,
weiß Johannes der Täufer wohl,
kannt ihn, da er beim Jordan stund,
Christum gezeigt mit Hand und Mund.

2 Aber man hats gegläubet nicht,
darum zum kräftigern Bericht,
verschickt er seiner Jünger zween,
ihn selbst zu hören und zu sehn.

3 Denen wird auf ihr große Frag
ein Antwort geben aus der That,
Johanni stracks wider zu sagn,
was Augn und OHren mit sich tragn.

4 Die Blinden sehn, die Lahmen gehn,
rein werden die Aussätzigen.
Die Tauben kommen zum Gehör,
die Toten stehn und gehn herfür.

5 Es wird den Armen in der Welt
das Evangelion vermeldt,
und selig ist, der sich an mir
nicht ärgert, spricht Christus der Herr.

6 Daraus man je vernehme wohl,
er sei der, so da kommen soll:
denn er hat des Propheten Wort
ins Werk bracht, und zum End geführt.

7 Die Schrift setzt ihn unter die Leut,
so Mangel han und Herzenleid,
die sind sein Volk, den hilft er aus:
er an ihn gläubt hat Heil und Trost.

8 Des sollen wir uns trösten all,
in vielerlei Kreuz und Trübsal;
der einmal kommen ist zu uns,
Christus, beweist ewige Gunst.

9 Des sei Gott der Vater gelobt,
mit seinem Sohn, gesandt herob,
auch der heilige Geist zugleich,
auf Erden wie im Himmelreich.
