Nun danket alle Gott . . . er läßt uns abermal

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Nun danket alle Gott . . . er läßt uns abermal” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl for Trinity XXVII, first series. It is a parodia of Rinkart’s famous hymn of the same first line (first two lines, as nowadays presented), in which every stanza begins with Rinkart’s original line (= two lines). I have used my own rendering instead of Winkworth’s.

Mel.: Nun danket alle Gott.

NOW thank we God with heart
And mouth, and hands extended,
Who granteth us to see
Another church-year ended—
A year in which His Word
Hath blessed us plenteously
With health and blessedness
And all prosperity.

2 The ever-gracious God
Grant us on earth remaining,
And our posterity,
Pure doctrine, free from staining,
And may He make the pope
And every heresy
Be far from us and all
Lands else, eternally.

3 The Father and the Son,
One God, be praised and lauded,
With Him, the Peer of both,
Enthroned in one true Godhead:
May He in mercy this
Our Hallelujah hear,
Till thanks in heav’n resound
From all His Zion dear!

Nun danket alle Gott
mit Herzen, Mund und Händen,
er läßt uns abermal
ein Kirchenjahr vollenden.
Ein Jahr, in welchem uns
sein Wort mit Rath und That,
zu Heil und Seligkeit,
gewünscht gesegnet hat.

2 Der ewigreiche Gott
woll uns bei unserm Leben
und auch auf Kindeskind
die reine Lehre geben.
Er schaffe, daß der Pabst
und alle Ketzerei
von uns und anderswo,
auf ewig ferne sei.

3 Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott
dem Vater und dem Sohne,
und dem der Beiden gleich,
in einem Gottheitsthrone!
Er nehme gnädiglich
ein Halleluja an,
bis ihm sein Zion dort
im Himmel danken kann.
