Herr, der du Gnad und Hilf verheißt

Here is my translation of "Herr, der du Gnad und Hilf verheißt" (Hannoverian Hymnal, 1657). It is stated in KELG to be "an abbreviation of the Low German Litany" (J. Freder, †1562). I only wish the phrase about trampling the devil underfoot had been preserved; I think it is kind of lumped into the end of stanza 4 here. The prescribed melody is "Vater unser im Himmelreich."


1. O Lord, Redeemer of Thy host,
God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
Most Holy Trinity, most Blest,
On Christendom Thy mercy rest!
Good Lord, our faithful God we plead,
Have mercy in our every need.

2. Oh, spare us, God, Thy wrath forego,
Do not reward us as we owe.
Do not Thy mercy’s depths forget,
Our errors and our sins remit
Help soul and body, goods and name
To be preserved from harm and shame.

3. O Father, earnestly we pray
Through Jesus Christ, Thy help convey,
By His birth, bloodshed, toil, and sweat,
His wounds and passion, cross and death,
His resurrection and ascent,
Deliver us as we repent.

4. By teaching pure on us bestow
That Godly fear may sprout and grow,
That youth be raised in decency,
And from all sin and evil flee,
Make all who would Thy Word efface
To meet destruction and disgrace.

5. Let all who have authority
Fulfill their office carefully;
Our magistrates protect and guide,
Their work with blessings all provide;
Grant pure and peaceful government,
All famine, plague, and strife prevent.

6. Deliver all the suffering,
To them Thy help and comfort bring;
Destroy their yoke, their load remove
By which Thou didst their ardor prove;
So prove Thy grace and constancy,
From grief and bondage set them free.

7. O Jesus Christ, God’s very Son,
O Jesus Christ, Thou Mercy-Throne,
O Jesus Christ, Thou Lamb of God,
That borest the world’s sinful load,
Have mercy on us, hear our pleas,

2. Verschon uns, Gott, ach Gott, verschon
und nach Verdienste uns nicht lohn!
Gedenk an deine große Gnad,
verzeih uns unsre Missethat.
Gib, daß uns Ehr, Gut, Seel und Leib
durch deine Hilf ohn Schaden bleib.

3. Wir bitten dich, o Vater, noch,
um Christi Willen, hilf uns doch
durch sein Geburt, Blut, Schweiß und Noth,
durch seine Wunden, Kreuz und Tod,
